Not sure if I'll catch the film, it sounds like I'd enjoy it, but the comments don't fill me with confidence! However, enjoying Bear McC's score. I'm surprised nobody's noted the strong Explorers vibe in the titular track, notably the rhythmic bass and soaring theme. Having said that, it doesn't quite stick in the memory as Jerry's music did. Nice riff/homage though and a fun (albeit perhaps a touch long) album.

I'm so tired of seeing teenage genre flicks every time I log on to Netflix, between this and SEE YOU YESTERDAY which were both released there recently. I know I'm getting old and weary, but I'd like to see more sci fi with proper adults in them. Is that too much to ask for?

Well yes a lot of their shows are in this vein. It is slightly disappointing that Sabrina is also a similar age group but I enjoy it. The score didn't grab me initially but I'll give it another listen later.

See You Yesterday transcends the teenage tropes with a much more interesting take on its subject. The exception, perhaps, but don't knock it.

Thanks to your glowing comment Dr. Nigel I have listened to the score again in full today starting with the last few tracks. I agree with your assessment that the theme is solid and gets a good workout. While the synths initially distracted me, they are nicely enough blended with the orchestra to be what I consider a mostly orchestral soundtrack. A lovely companion to The Professor and the Madman.

For my playlist I moved the track “Rim of the World” (end titles?) to the end, following “Pretty Brave After All.” They work well together as a conclusion to the score.

the more I listen to the score , the more I like it.
A really solid effort: from watching the soulless, loud movie I would not have suspected it.

Great analysis, Jon. This is now my favorite Bear McCreary score.

Poor Bear McCreary!
I don't think even Jerry Goldsmith had to polish a turd as bad as this one.
I was aghast at just how lazy and bad and misjudged this film was.
Who is it aimed at?
Far too violent and potty mouthed for little kids, but embarrassing in the sense/logic/plot department to be taken seriously by even GOONIES fans!!
I was stunned by it's sheer awfulness. And the kids were horrible.
BUT!!
Like Jerry Goldsmith, Bear McC must have seen a great film in his mind's eye and managed to deliver a whopper of a score, containing great and memorable themes* and orchestrated and performed in such a full blooded way, it made me less fearful for the film music future in America.
Is a CD forthcoming from his own label or La La Land?

*it's been a while since I was immediately humming a film's theme right after it had ended.

it is exactly what I thought Kev, Bear must have seen some other movie, like The Goonies or even Super8, and composed the score to THAT.
This one is terrible and the Dariush kid is the most loathsome idiot brat ever, during the movie I actively prayed he would encounter some horrible, gruesome demise.

I LOVE THIS SCORE!!!
I can't stop playing it and humming it's themes.
Just brilliant stuff.
Such a throwback to those magical, propulsive scores of old.
