Firmware up dates are easy, do you have WIFI in your place?
If so, go into the set-up menu & there will be a heading for Firmware up dates. Set it to automatic, add your WIFI connection details (password etc.) & it will up date as & when the manufacture posts an up date.
The issue you may have is the machine requires an up date to bring it in line with current Firmware that are on the player & codes on the discs, maybe staggered through one, but called it quits after that. I had issues with a lot of Fox discs at one point as one machine had not up dated quick enough.
Other than that, go you the manufactures site & see their Firmware up dates for your machine & if you have a disc drive or thumb drive, down load it & then place disc or drive into the machine. It will go through its cycle switching off & on etc. until it’s good to go.
I only have an Oppo & a Cambridge (Oppo is no longer made), the Cambridge is awesome but OH MY it cost a lot compared to regular players.
I'm still using the old LG blu-ray player, model BD611. The only extras I wanted was USB port in front, and it was their last model that had a zoom-in feature. I avoided wifi as it's one more complication, plus I dont have wifi. You can install updates off a thumbdrive thru the USB port, assuming you can download the update to a computer first. I don't recall this unit having any updates. Are you having the same problem with the same disc on all of the BR players?
Blu Ray players are clearly not your friend Adam. Best to just accept that and move onto streaming. For the record Ive only had one problem with a movie and a simple firmware update took care of the issue.
I bought the Sony players from Target. The Samsung was a gift from my brother. The LG unit was from Best Buy.
The first Sony player I bought years ago played a number of movie discs just fine before it required a firmware update. From that point onward it's been nothing but trouble. A second Sony player, a Samsung and now an LG unit can't seem to handle playing more than one disc before they fail. It's bizarre.

I assume Adam has been checking the bottom of discs for that kind of crap (smokey film build-up, greasy finger prints, hairs, pet fur, etc) that could cause a problem. That leaves only one explanation - some weird energy vortex in his region.

I hate that smokey film build-up on the surface of DVDs. I can clean it off, but it takes some work, and lighter fluid.
I am flabbergasted by your experience, wow, that is some bad luck. I bought my LG Blu-ray player (a model that also plays 3D movies) maybe five years ago or so and never had any problems with it.
