Anyone have any recollection of the episode/series mentioned in the above interview? Luckily 1998 isn't too far behind us so I'm sure it exists in archive form at least in the studio. I'd love to be able to see it.

Yes, I saw it twice, once when it was broadcast on Yorkshire TV at about half-past-midnight and once when it was broadcast on neighbouring Tyne Tees TV. I had it on VHS once, but that's long gone.

My recollection is that the student (who is now a film composer, but sorry I forget the name) scored a sequence and it was fairly complex with lots of ethnic instrumentation.

Barry coached him to simplify it and focus on the emotion rather than underlining the ethnicity, as the ethnicity was already obvious in the image.

He then talked about when he scored Out of Africa ("I met Sydney in a girl's school, he wanted all this African music, but I told him it wasn't about Africa but these two people, etc., etc.") and then the student presented his revised score.

Cheers

Thank you Stephen! I had a feeling you might come along smile

I wonder if there's any way to actually see this again. I'm surprised it hasn't found its way to YouTube yet, but seeing as how it was relatively obscure I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

I feel sure the original video master tape must exist. They weren't still wiping programmes in 1998, surely.

It was only a regional (not national) television production, and only broadcast on two regional stations in the North of England as far as I know (Yorkshire TV and Tyne Tees). It was only shown once in each region as far as I can remember (but I could be wrong!) and in the midnight graveyard shift.

So hardly anyone will have seen it.

I seem to recall even Geoff Leonard hadn't seen it.

Incidentally, I recall this programme also had an edition of Michael Caine teaching acting. I remember him staring into the camera and saying really slowly, in that inimitable Michael Caine way, "Notice, I am not blinking"; and he did his thing about how when you play drunk people, you have to remember drunk people are trying to act sober.

Cheers

I saw that weird thing on Youtube in the last year. No Barry video, just that not blinking crap.

Geoff thinks I may be mistaken about that Caine thing being part of the Masterclass series. Possibly.

On Facebook, Nick Haysom has posted a clipping from The Stage show this series started 8 Oct 1988 at 10.40pm. It confirms it is produced for Tyne Tees television by the Zenith North production company and the episodes of this performing arts series are:

Wayne Sleep—I remember watching this one.
John Barry
Carla Lane—I wish I'd seen this one
John Godber
Richard Griffiths
Graham Gouldman

So I was definitely wrong about that Michael Caine one being part of this series.

Cheers

That’s great Stephen! Do you remember if they were half hour episodes or longer?

Now to find a way to see it. Like you said I’m sure the master is still around at least.

I’d love to have heard the Desert Islands Discs he did back in the late 60’s I believe, but I’m sure that one is long gone.

I'm pretty sure they were half hour only.

Barry did Desert Island Discs twice. This link is to his '90s appearance. It's the '60s one being sought here. I think that one was wiped.

Cheers

Geoff contacted the producer. Apparently these shows were licensed for one broadcast only, which means no one can show these again, as is.

Pity.

Cheers

That is terrible. Thank you Stephen. I guess our only hope is that some super fan has it on VHS somewhere.

Well, I'm pretty sure we know someone who has it. He's just very difficult to communicate with (reclusive), technologically clueless (wouldn't know how to transfer or upload it) and probably not going to lend it out to anybody more technically aware!

Fingers crossed! The good thing is that the original master exists, perhaps in years to come somebody will be able to legally do something with it.

Some clips of the programme have appeared on the John Barry Appreciation Society Facebook group, if anyone wants to see them.

Thanks Stephen! At the moment all I see on the page are a couple of stills/photos from the program. Was there video posted at some point?

Ack, just my luck. Maybe they’ll be reposted, I wonder why they were removed?

Chic topicsmile
I had no idea that my teacher might be doing something wrong. Moreover, why do I need an instructor then, if I look for flaws in his actions? What will I learn then?
The only thing I learned from this topic is that on the Internet you can use the professional essay writing company service and order a professionally written essay, term paper, or any other written work here https://eduhelphub.com/
. And I think that if I have problems, I will definitely use this service."

Which is why we need verified instructors, especially in higher education. Moreover, most of the college instructors cannot provide as much time as needed for one-on-one interactions. This makes it even harder for some students who needs more attention.
