I was on iTunes looking to buy Rozsa's Eye Of The Needle score, and was surprised to see that they offer both the TER album and the Varese "Encore" edition. My dilemma of course is, which one should I get?

The content of each album is the same, but the Varese is a dollar more. Since the Encore edition is the more recent release, was it remastered? If so, is the sound actually improved? Or is it just eqed differently? Is it brickwalled? Is it identical to the cheaper TER recording?

Thanks for any insights!

The Encore edition was remastered by Erick Labson, with his usual skill. Since it's hot mastered, you'll hear more details but have less musicality (soundstage ambience and perspective, dynamics) and a possible fatiguing listening experience. The original album recording is not really good, though.

I don't know the TER edition, which was only released on LP, and now digitally.

But I have the Varèse CD Club (and LP) which is preferable to the Encore edition.

Better pull that trigger if reports of iTunes' impending demise are true (specifically the a la carte offering).

It's just the app that's ending business. Apple will continue to sell music via a new Music App.

Ah see that now. Early reports leading up to the conference were strangely silent on the music purchasing aspect. Apparently iTunes' for Windows will live on, so no issue for me then.

If there are really two different versions, go for the older one...

Thanks for the feedback. I went for the TER version!
