John Leach played the cymbalom, but what about the moody flute?

What about the jazz group and the long blues version with solos on flute, sax, vibes, and trumpet? And the rhythm section? And the bongos?

And on the fight cue Barry uses a soprano sax--rarely used in film music at the time, even rarely in jazz--except for Coltrane and Steve Lacy. Yes, the soprano sax was prominent in New Orleans music before this, and would again be popular in a few years later, popularized by Wayne Shorter, Joe Farrell, Jerome Richardson, and others. But in 1965, not so much.

Check out the sax on KKBB from THUNDERBALL

KKBB from Thunderball is John Scott on alto; as good as that is, I really like his brief solo on the "Thunderball" instrumental, which is very cool and seductive. He may also have played on Ipcress, but I don't know for sure.

Leon Calvert (trumpet), Vic Flick (guitar), John Scott (Alto sax, flute and alto flute), Tristan Fry (percussion & timpani), John Leach (cimbalom). Ronnie Price was most likely on keyboards but this has never been confirmed.

Thanks, Geoff. Scott was prominent on that score--that flute!

There is nothing Geoff doesn't know about John Barry. You should write a book...oh yes you already have, I have 2 copies of it, I call it my Barry bible. Thanks Geoff, Pete and Gareth. wink

Thanks! Does anyone know if John Scott also played sax on "I'll Drink to That" from The Chase?

Geoff has written 3 books on John Barry. What about the baritone sax solo on The Whisperers? I'm thinking not Scott.

The third book, Hit and Miss: The Story of The John Barry Seven, has a lot about John's entry into the film world, but it's not exactly selling like hot cakes!

As to Scotty and The Whisperers, he certainly played flute and sax on the score, but baritone sax would not have been him.

Hey Geoff, I got Hit and Miss! I keep an eye on those British music mags--Mojo and so on--and they've always been keen to give Barry some space when something new is released, but I haven't seen a review of the book yet. Have you approached them about it?
