I'm still amazed Williams never composed a piano concerto. Closest I can find is the "Scherzo for Piano and Orchestra" from 2014.

Personally, I appreciate taking film music, re-arranging it, and creating something new. Especially if it can successfully cross over into mainstream classical. More exposure for film music... yeaaah!
Does it work all the time? No. Even some of John Williams’ recent new arrangements of classic cues (Han Solo and The Princess / Scherzo For Motorcycle and Orchestra) don’t work.
But when they do (Morricone/Yo-Yo Ma) it’s glorious, IMO.

I love what I've heard so far. I've grown increasingly tired of "soundtrack" albums that all too often feature insanely repetitive movements that may lack proper beginnings or endings or development -- or all three!

I heard some of Mutter's versions in the concert that also featured "Markings" (haven't yet heard the whole album), and I think it was a little TOO elaborate and virtuoso for the piece in question; I think it was something from STAR WARS. But I'm curious about the whole thing anyway.
As others have said, these albums are hit and miss. I don't really need umpteen variations of this stuff, but sometimes they're intriguing interpretations.

I've had this beautiful gem for a few days and I can say that the album is, as expected, phenomenal. I’ll write more in a large article that I’m going to publish before the premiere. Several pieces, like Hedwig’s Theme, Donnybrook Fair and The Duel are very vibrant and virtuoso. Hedwig’s Theme in the extended version is a revelation. Dracula sounds phenomenal and dark. Luke and Leia is beautiful, just like Across The Stars. Sabrina is quite similar to the version that appeared on Cinema Serenade, Schindler's List doesn't differ much from the original either.?
When I listen to this CD, I can easily imagine how much fun Williams had when he was creating these arrangements. He didn't want to beat the originals, this isn't what this album is about. It's about great art, friendship and time spent together. It's about enjoying music that is able to cross all boundaries.
I am looking forward to the deluxe version, but even this one is definitely one of the record events of the year. I'm telling you, this ends with at least one Grammy Award
