Just listened to the DEMENTIA CD and am glad to report that it appears complete, or pretty darn near-complete, and includes the all-important part where the jazz club musicians serenade the Gamine with her own theme and launch us into the nightmarish climax. What a wonderful release!

Excellent CD. "Wig Alley" was apparently a version of an already-existing Rogers piece called "Morpo". Here it is as seen and heard in the film:

The video info credits these performers: "Band line up (Library of Congress): Shorty Rogers and his Giants: Shorty Rogers, trumpet; Milt Bernhart, trombone; Jimmy Giuffre, tenor sax; John Graas, French horn; Howard Rumsey, acoustic double bass; plus tuba, piano, drums, congas."

Here is the recording of "Morpo":

What a great release! The film itself is unlike anything you've ever seen (except perhaps ERASERHEAD). It's like one of those dreams where you want to wake up, but the dream keeps going on, getting more bizarre. Antheil's score perfectly matches the abstract nightmarish aura of the film. Marni Nxon's vocal oohs and aaahs are akin to a human theremin. Antheil's score shifts moods from moment to moment to adjust to the bizarre on-screen images. If anyone is on the fence about buying this CD, jump over that fence. This score is a fantastic conglomeration of everything from echoes of Stravinsky's RITE OF SPRING, to film noir scoring, to Latin dance rhythms, to the eerie Marnie Nixon vocals, to a sultry tango, to who-knows-where-else.

A truly unique score.

DEMENTIA - fantastic release! What an inspired choice to pair it with the 1943 concerto - I love that vintage sound, and feels like a soundtrack as well. Stupid question - the Dementia tape is music/singer-only, no effects, correct?

Correct, no effects.

This is a hard to define score. Sort of reminds me of early horror/sci-fi music by Sawtell and Shefter, with some recurring themes, but varies nicely due to the nature of the film. It's well paired with the Ernest Gold concerto.
For the record (or CD), and in contrast with the information above, I noticed some minimal effects (crowd noise during the jazzy parts, and wind effect for a graveyard scene). The track notes indicate that music with more noticeable effects was omitted from the release, but unlike the film audio, the sound quality is much better.

For the record, yes, it's all stated clearly in the booklet - at the time I responded to your question I was still unsure what we were going to do about certain effects - the plan at that point was to get rid of anything with effects - when I ultimately heard the finished edit I liked the minor ones that were left because, as I state in the booklet, they were almost musical.

Finally, either I misread your post the first time or you've edited it (EDIT: Clearly you've edited it several times now) - the part about it not being the complete score. The film runs approximately fifty-seven minutes. I believe if you clock the Dementia portion of the CD it runs app. fifty-seven minutes - we edited out VERY little, perhaps twenty seconds tops, and what's gone was overwhelmed by a sound effect or dialogue under which was music we've heard before. For the record.

I figured the discrepancy occurred late in the cd production since effects are mentioned in the notes, but I thought the thread should be corrected regarding them. I had no idea how much music might be omitted, so I edited my post so as to not overstate that aspect. Thanks for the clarification about that. smile
I edited the post again to elaborate what effects I meant.

Help! I can't stop playing this score! It's so much fun. Many thanks again to Bruce for uncovering this gem.

BTW, I love the cue titles. "Dementia", "More Dementia", Return of Dementia", etc.
But I think you missed a bet by not calling cue 5 "Dementia - The Final Confrontation" big grin
