After watching the movie, i prefer the score over the sketchbook, is more narrative (some stuff is missing, but nothing important, all the themes and ideas are sprinkled trough it) and cohesive.

Is it just me or can everyone hear

Battlestar Galactica (Bear McCreary) in the orchestration, instrumentation and vocals in the score?

Yes. Quite embarassing.

I thought so. At least I think the loudness wars are over. I am quite surprised at the fidelity and balance of the mixing across the audible spectrum. His last scores were mixed LOUD and over emphasized the lower frequency range, drowning out the instrumentation that requires more grace.

It definitely sounds like BSG.

A coincidence, maybe.

But really - it´s very hard to believe when Zimmer claims he worked so hard at a score, trying something new and daring... and then it´s just something we already have heard before and maybe just was parked on his hard drive.

It could be a coincidence... but Zimmer is famous for using other peoples' works on his scores - specially Morricone.

So, no. It is not.

I agree. And I was not clear enough in my statement above: what I really find hard to believe is that Zimmer works as hard as he claims on these scores. It‘s mostly cut and paste. He repeats the same statements in every interview (hear the podcast on NTTD): huge honour, always a fan in his youth, filmmakers are his friends, he is humbled by colleagues, he never thinks he can do it, he does not want to disappoint his friends… it‘s as if even his interview answers come from a hard drive.

I guess he was a very good composer and arranger within his abilities in the 90‘s - and then he became a business man who discovered that Hollywood can and wants to be sold the same stuff over and over.

I prefer the Sketchbook. I haven't finished it yet but so far I can't really find much melody in the actual film score. Will return to it after seeing the movie, maybe that will change my first impression.

First part of the sketchbook is fine, but then it just goes on and on for, what, 100 minutes or so? The score is a more focussed and lean affair, even though it's still a lengthy 70 minutes plus.

I've seen the movie yesterday in an Imax theatre. Gorgeous looking and faithful adaptation of book. Can't wait see it again. The score fits the movie like a glove. I prefer the soundtrack over the sketchbook but will add a couple its tracks to my playlist (as a sort of prolonged "end titles").

But apart from maybe 2-3 tracks the Sketchbook is more melodic. The score album has way more than 2-3 tracks that I would skip.

Hans Zimmer's soundtrack from Dune. The real one this time:

Listening to this and about the 1:08,30 mark it breaks into TOTO's Dune theme.

Not really, but both have similar majestic chords.
