Wow, some of the individual cover art is amateurishly dire.

But what are you gonna do...?

I will be getting this set, but it is a little disappointing that even the mighty Criterion doesn't seem to have been able to get the newer 4K scans of Godzilla and King Kong vs Godzilla from Toho, and will likely be using the decade-old 2008 HD scans from Toho instead of giving the rest of the films the "Criterion treatment" with new masters and clean-up. It would be nice to be surprised but if that stuff were coming the press release would've included it. Oh well.

Thanks for the update!
To preserve my own sanity, I have to think of the films by:
- Their Japanese titles for the original Japanese-language versions (Gojira, Kingu Kongu tai Gojira, etc.)
- Their English titles for the English-language-dubbed versions (Godzilla, King of the Monsters, Son of Godzilla, etc.)
So, when they state, “International English-language dub tracks for Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla.”, my insecurities kick in.
Which dub tracks are they? If they are the newer ones (1980s?), no thanks. The ones for the AIP versions (Titan/Titra?) are the ones for me - but that’s just me being self-indulgent and selfish. I’m just hung up on the dubbing work done by Peter Fernandez, et. al., which I find far superior to the later versions.
I’m interested, but I will wait until others have purchased them and I hear their reviews.

It's an artistic styling choice. I see it a lot nowadays. Don't care for it myself.

And I think the art is cute - captures how I think of the later films, which I kinda love.

"International English-language tracks" has always meant the non-Titan/Titra tracks, and I assume it means the same thing here.

Yeah, I would have been all over this if the American versions were included. I wanted the versions I grew up with on channel 5.

Ah well, I still have my VHS tapes. big grin

Some of the English-language versions are included. The late-'60s films, I think.

Toho always had their own English tracks done in the 60s. There were no "redone" ones, they were just "new" to American ears. The only thing I'm not sure is whether the English dub for "Mothra vs. Godzilla" is the same that was used in the US for the AIP release "Godzilla vs. The Thing". "Invasion Of The Astro Monster" did have an alternate English dub than was used for "Monster Zero" but my understanding is that Nick Adams did participate on that one (by contrast, Russ Tamblyn wasn't used for Toho's "international" dub of "War Of The Gargantuas") and every Godzilla film afterwards through Godzilla vs. Hedorah I think should theoretically have two English dubs. "Terror Of Mechogodzilla" is the same dub with just the extra prologue added.

Will get this but there won't be as many old DVDs tossed in the process as I was expecting to.

Criterion release is region A. There seem to be plans to release this set for region B in UK in November.

I can respect that.
They are colorful--I'll grant you that.
I'm just a sucker for original poster art.

The original movie is the best, while the sequels need a MST3K commentary.

Me too, so I take your point.

Some of the art in this set comes from favorite comics artists, one reason it appeals.
