From YouTube...Leonard Nimoy Discusses Star Trek The Motion Picture. It seems Nimoy and Me had a Mind Meld. From 1979 till now...I have always said that Star Trek The Motion Picture had the wrong Director, Script and this awful Human less factor. No Humor, and These Trek Team have been around for years and share what Star Trek 2,3, 4, 5 and 6 showed...Friendship. It is very Fascinating! What Nimoy States as the truth.
Still my favorite Star Trek movie. Love the spectacle of it.

Nothing! But when fueled by the mystical power of stonehendge....the infinite.
While I understand the criticism that it's a cold picture, it's got a great vibe all to its own. it was bold. Part 2 is probably my favorite, but TMP is indeed spectacular. Lot's resting on Jerry's shoulders here, admittedly
Star Trek: The Motion Picture is my favorite of the bunch, tied with The Wrath of Khan. I love that it's in line with the tone of "The Cage," which is one of my all-time favorite episodes. I don't get how people don't see the movie being plainly aware of the dynamic being off, and intentionally at that. Spock isn't focused on anything but V'Ger for nearly the entire movie. It's a striking shift that accentuates the danger of this unknown presence and it helps to isolate Kirk even more. Kirk's one-on-one scenes with McCoy and Spock are some of my favorites with the characters.
And anyone saying it's without humor must not be paying attention. McCoy has some solid one-liners. But my favorite has to be Kirk's barely restrained fear when he urges, "Spock, transmit now!"
Just Reporting The Facts Of The Guy who experience this Mess first hand...Video Proof...Nimoy was Right. The Longer Version Years later was somewhat of an improvement..but it missed the mark what the others had...Friendship.
Only thing still good...Jerry Goldsmith’s Excellent Score.
Really looking forward to this but I can't find any real info online about locations that will be showing it. I'm close to NYC so I assume I'll be able to find it.
I always kinda viewed TMP like Fantasia--the dialogue and story aren't hugely important--it's more about the images and the music. It would be operatic if the dialogue was just subtitled and the only soundtrack was the score and the sound FX.

It had the wrong touch and Nicholas Meyer showed what the right touch was -- a seafaring adventure in space where the people matter. Even Horner's score reflects this. Wise definitely didn't "get" Trek, or he focused on the earnestness of the original show and, in making a Serious Science Fiction Film, lost sight of the interplay and the humor, as others have stated. I don't think I've sat through the whole thing since it came out. Still, the score is great.
Yes what was needed in TMP was Scotty saying he knows the Enterprise like the back of his hand then walk into a pipe. There's plenty of humor and I don't mean unintentional humor in TMP. You can get enough fart, belch and barf gags elsewhere.

I don't think the Fantasia analogy is entirely off base, simply in that even Paramount executives in memos talked about the opportunity for music to take center stage in the production and for long sequences to play out without dialogue, with the music and visuals telling the story. However it's true that there are no naked centaurs, cupids or harpies in the picture.
