This just popped up on YouTube today. I’d only previously seen an excerpt of this from the Rules showreel:

Still on the lookout for that Masterclass episode, perhaps one day it’ll make an appearance.

The problem with master class is the production company no longer exists and we were advised the licensing was for one broadcast performance only, so it's basically unusable / unreleasable.

That's not so say some enterprising person who still has it on VHS (sadly, I don't have it any more) can't upload it.

Has anyone ever been to Rules Restaurant? I've been aware of it since reading The End of the Affair (shown in the clip) and I'd love to go one day. Checking the menu, it's quite expensive but that's to be expected.

I went there for a work/team dinner in a private dining room upstairs. Part of the restaurant was closed off that evening as they were setting up to film a scene for ‘Spectre” the next day (it’s also Mallory’s restaurant of choice). Amazing place, great food

Yes, very much a shame. It would be great to see Barry coaching another composer, providing some insight into his own thought processes.

I wonder who the student was, and if they continued on with composing/filmscoring.

The pity is I had it and watched it several times, but never transferred it and the VHS is long gone.

In brutal honestly, it wasn't that interesting, but in hindsight I wish I had kept it.

Basically, it started with Barry telling the story about how he met Sydney Pollack in a girl's school and told him (of Out of Africa), "This isn't a film about Africa."

(That's a well-told tale.)

Then the student (forgive me, I forget the name) demonstrated his score for a somewhat avant garde Oriental film scene with some Orientally flavoured music.

Barry praised it but coached him that he didn't need to use the music to tell the audience where they were because that was already clear, but to get into the emotions of the viewer.

The student presented his revised version and that was pretty much the end of the show.

And yes, although I'm embarrassed to forget the name (age!), he is an active composer with his own website.

Cheers
