Ruby Cairo works as a series of variations of a single theme. The Specialist has that slow, seductive theme, some choral work, great suspense cues, and some action music. Could have been an oscar nominee if it was for, you know, a good film. I couldn't give a toss to those who say it's all samey. What it is, is big, romantic, melodic, beautiful and emotional gorgeousness! For me it would be between Across The Sea Of Time, Swept From The Sea, or the actually rather different Playing By Heart. I remember queuing up for JB's autograph after the 1998 Albert Hall concert trying to think of something to say, I was going to tell him I could listen to a whole album of music in a similar vein to his Love Theme music from The Scarlet Letter (and I could!), but I bottled out with a dull 'thank you very much.' But there are so many superb Barry scores from that decade -- Scarlet Letter, Across The Sea of Time and the wonderful Playing By Heart (which Harvey Weinstein had thrown-out).
