I got a very nice review from Pauline Kayland [Kael] who noted what a devoted actor I was to go through it, with eating the fly and all. So there you have it. The fly just flew away, there was no bug in the mouth but those cheeky editors took a few frames out just to give us something to talk about years later." I saw RAIDERS many times on it's original run in theaters. When the fly crawls on his lip all the guys laughed and all the girls went "Eiwwwwwww!!" (is that how you spell that expression?) 1981 was 38 years ago, and yet I have never seen Paul Freeman in anything but Raiders. Maybe he did a lot of British TV? Off to IMDb to check... Edit: Nope! Never saw him in anything but Raiders. He has done loads of TV, though. DUDE! HOT FUZZ He played the priest!! (Also in an episode of YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES back in the 1990's, but not as BELLOQ. He also played Parmider Nagra's father on E.R. And probably a shotload more. Very MaxB

He was a Frenchman working for the Nazis, so he was a Nazi archaeologist. If the movie was set in 1944 and Belloq was working for the Free French or Americans, I was have said he was an Allied archaeologist. Thanks. I knew that, but I always figured the Belloq character as more of a mercenary, only interested in his own personal ends, not ideology.

He was a Frenchman working for the Nazis, so he was a Nazi archaeologist. If the movie was set in 1944 and Belloq was working for the Free French or Americans, I was have said he was an Allied archaeologist. Belloq's interest would have been archaeological rather than political. Seeing as it was 1936, he would have been involved with the Nazis because they had the resources to find the Ark, and not for any ideological reasons. Had it been after the German conquest of France (1940), Belloq could have been a Vichy archaeologist. However, it is established--by Belloq--in the great bar scene between Belloq and Jones that both men are opposite sides of the same coin and not political whatsoever. I think we all can agree the monkey was a Nazi. There was never any doubt about that.
