It grieves me to learn of the passing of such a brilliant animator. Here's a link to the Recobbled Cut of what would have been his magnum opus had he been allowed to finish it as he intended:

His work on Roger Rabbit was amazing. Its sad he had his pet project taken away from him. He labored on it for decades. Don Bluth (animators) moonlighted on the project and help get it finished. Bluth later stated he felt bad taking over another animators project and I think he regretted it a bit. RIP Mr. Williams

If only Fred Calvert and the Weinsteins showed as much remorse for their roles in the mutilation of The Thief and the Cobbler. I think Bluth only participated in the revision (I believe his studio animated at least one of the horrible musical numbers inserted into the film) so that he could fund Thumbelina (which I confess to having a soft spot for) and Troll in Central Park (which I’ve never seen).

For those interested, Garrett Gilchrist’s Thief Archive contains an extensive collection of Williams’ work including lots of animation tests for the Thief and his work outside of it, including a very good transfer of a 16mm print of his Oscar-winning adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Thanks, I look forward to browsing the videos. While there's some fine CGI films I think somethings been lost in the digital era. 2D animation used to be a lot more creative and experimental. CGI generally tries to get more and more realistic losing it's artistic edge. Kinda defeating the whole purpose of animation.
