I was on Walmart.com looking for Les Baxter albums, when I was surprised to learn that Les is known for some FAMOUS QUOTES, ones suitable for display on an inspirational-style poster, accompanied by scenes of ocean waves, or idyllic beaches, or a dove landing on a tree branch. Each 24 x 20 poster can be yours for only $13.99. Among the Les Baxter quotes:

"When I want 30 musicians in the orchestra, I get 30." ---- Wow! Gotta love the confidence and determination.

"Well, that's the secret of commerciality, a simpler style and you stick with it." ---- Honest and direct. I'm displaying this on my classroom wall for the start of the school year!

"I don't know what the problem with Capitol is. Some one's got to wake 'em up. Prod 'em a little bit." ---- Well, it's not Franklin or Churchill, but Grandmom's birthday is coming up and she always enjoyed the occasional pithy thought!

Seriously, though, Walmart must employ some sort of algorithm to gather quotes for any name you search for and then suggest them for posters. This is probably old news to some of you, but was new to me. Here are some from Jerry Goldsmith:

"I have been using the MAC solely for years, and got very comfortable with it." ---- Genius. Pure genius.

"My wife has all of them in a vault...a copy of every album." ---- Quick, call Geraldo! Pristine copies of Goldsmith albums stored in a vault!

I found more quotes by the likes of Morricone and Herrmann. Good for a chuckle or two. (Be sure to search under "all departments" and not just music.)

When in an interview John Williams asked if he were rich. His reply rich is hard to define

Walmart.com is offering this gem of an inspirational poster (for $19.98) from Alex North:

"Composers today get a TV script on Friday and have to record on Tuesday. It's just dreadful to impose on gifted talent and expect decent music." ---- Give 'em hell, Alex! (I love the rowboat scenery so apt for this quote.)

And from John Williams...

"Any working composer, painter, or sculptor will tell you that inspiration comes at the eighth hour of labour rather than as a bolt out of the blue. We have to get our vanities and our preconceptions out of the way and do the work in the time allotted." ---- Not bad at all! I wonder if I can get this on a t-shirt?

How about some Morton Gould?

"It's not a special taste. An American composer should have something to say to a cab driver." ---- I'm saving this quote for my deathbed. You know, just a father passing along wisdom to his children.

Wasn't it Lorne Balfe who said in that now infamously deleted video, speaking of a score he did and how the theme was dropped and it was the "fucking baseline" something like: "Nobody has time for that shit".

That's a Wal-Mart T-shirt right there.
