Chris Young has proven time and again that he can create the most thrilling score to the most intimate. I can count so many of his scores from the 1980s to the present. He can do it all. Now, let's watch the Monkey King which is an enjoyable escapist fantasy.
Always nice to read more from Chris! A crying shame he was never approached to do film 3. From talking to him for the Intrada releases of the first two scores, I know he was excited to have an epic trilogy under his belt. Besides which, I thought his second score was an even richer experience than the first, and was very keen to hear where he'd take the material next. C'est la vie.
Music is the best part of this two movies for me. I enjoyed the second score even more than first and waiting something greatest in the third and it was total disappointment when I heard that Young isn't work on it.
Sad, that even Young have no idea why they chose not to go with him. Maybe it's a money matters or something else, but in the end the score for the third movie didn't get a release.
My hope is that Christopher would get a new big project (it could be Doctor Strange but it's in the past) in America, China, Japan (Don Davis with Tokyo Ghoul as an example) or any other countries. But to be honest Young's drama scores is something that doesn't happen often, so the work on something in this genre would be blessing also
He wasn't called back on the third because of money issues indeed. The third film has a smaller scale to it. Still kind of weird they couldn't at least let him know, thereby perhaps giving him a chance to work something out.
A fourth film is far from a certainty now, as the third one was a box-office disappointment. So if it happens, it'll be on a further reduced budget, and they'll be even less able to afford Young.
