Kritzerland is proud to present two new releases:

BEN BAGLEY’S CONTEMPORARY BROADWAY REVISITED

Songs by Kander & Ebb, Jones and Schmidt, Jerry Herman, Bock & Harnick, and others

Starring: Katharine Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Margaret Whiting, Anthony Perkins John Reardon, Fay De Witt, Kaye Ballard, Helen Gallagher, and more

Ben Bagley’s Contemporary Broadway Revisited was a brief respite from Bagley’s usual single composer/lyricist tributes, this one featuring some, at the time, rare material by Kander & Ebb, Schmidt & Jones, Bock & Harnick, Jerry Herman, and others, and featuring one of his starriest casts, what with Miss Katharine Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Margaret Whiting, Anthony Perkins, John Reardon, Fay De Witt, Kaye Ballard, Helen Gallagher, and more.

The majority of the songs on this CD are by Kander & Ebb and Schmidt & Jones and there are some real gems. There are cut songs from Flora, the Red Menace, The Act, 110 in the Shade, The Rink, and Chicago, plus rare gems from shows that were, at the time of this album, not well known at all. Of course, here we are, all these years later, and several of these songs have become cabaret staples and little classics on their own.

Contemporary Broadway is one of the best of the Bagley series. As always, we’ve cleaned up the sound, corrected booklet errors, and have recreated the amazing art of Harvey Schmidt.

BEN BAGLEY’S CONTEMPORARY BROADWAY REVISITED is limited to 500 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping. This is a PRE-ORDER – CDs will ship by the last week of October, but never fear, we’ve actually been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com. Also note that your PayPal receipt is the only receipt you get – we don’t send out confirmations beyond that.

Kritzerland is also proud to present another in our ongoing series of classical releases:

NEW YORK PROFILES – THE MUSIC OF NORMAN DELLO JOIO

Music composed by Norman Dello Joio

Once upon a time in America, we had a Golden Age of American classical music. It was an exciting time, and new American works were being premiered week in and week out – new symphonies, concertos, ballets, operas – and in addition to the superstars like Aaron Copland, George Gershwin, Howard Hanson, Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber and a few others, we heard works by Roy Harris, William Schuman, Randall Thompson, Robert Ward, Douglas Moore, Lee Hoiby, Virgil Thomson, Walter Piston, David Diamond, Henry Cowell, Homer Keller, and on and on and on, including the subject of this CD: Norman Dello Joio. Over the course of his long and successful career, Dello Joio won numerous awards, including, in 1957, the Pulitzer Prize for Meditations on Ecclesiastes. He was associated with the brilliant choreographer, Martha Graham, for whom he composed several ballets. He also wrote several scores for television, including his classic music for Air Power, Here Is New York, which used some themes from his work New York Profiles, and several others including his 1965 score to The Louvre, for which he won an EMMY award.

Dello Joio’s music is at its heart, tonal and accessible. He could be adventurous but in the end his music remains both powerful and extremely beautiful, as the works on this CD demonstrate brilliantly. Mastering engineer James Nelson has worked wonders with some classic mono recordings, and “New York Profiles” is presented in beautiful stereo.

I thought the Dello Joio might be of interest, given his scoring work in film and television - he is one of my all-time favorite American classical composers and the music on this CD is fantastic - give the samples a try and see what you think.

And Contemporary Broadway Revisited is filled with great rare Kander & Ebb, Schmidt and Jones, Jerry Herman, Bock and Harnick and more, and what a cast - Katharine Hepburn, Alan Arkin, Anthony Perkins, Kaye Ballard, John Reardon, Fay De Witt, Margaret Whiting and more!

Ooh, this one is on the list. (The Dello Joio, though I also have my eye on all the Ben Bagley's, which I have just barely dipped into so far....)

That's why one of my mystery clips was Dello Joio - wanted to whet everyone's appetite. I also recommend strongly the soundtrack to Air Power, which is fantastic - not the re-recording, but the original soundtrack on Columbia in incredible stereo - it's on an Albany CD coupled with a wonderful Symphony by John Vincent, also a Columbia album.

Thanks for the Albany rec, Bruce - found it and ordered right away. I only know Air Power from the re-recording, so look forward to hearing the original. And always up for 'new' symphonies.

Your Dello Joio release looks fantastic - looking forward to this one too...
