The Hateful Eight: I felt that Kurt Russell's channeling of John Wayne's True Grit character was the one performance which hampered an otherwise rock-solid, airtight cast. Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins and the rest of the cast were all outstanding, yet performance wise, and perhaps talentwise, Russell lagged behind those other actors.

My Man Godfrey: Carole Lombard. She was gorgeous and had some good comedic moments in this film, but for the most part her performance was not up to the level of what William Powell, Alice Brady, Mischa Auer, and Eugene Pallette accomplished in this classic film.

No specifics come to mind at the moment but usually the "comedic character" in the bunch drags a film down.

I'm tempted to add Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, and she was Oscar nominated for that role!

Ditto Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator. He was especially weak in his scenes opposite Russell Crowe.

Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential; and she won an Oscar for that!

I thought Russell was just fine in 8. Didn't get a Wayne vibe.
Sam J gave his all time best performance!

Please confine your picks to film. Otherwise we'll find ourselves in Tina Yothers and Jeremy Miller territory.

Really? I thought he was phenomenal in the role and the best thing about the film.

He looked intimidated and out of his league. Don't get me wrong, though; he's since become a tremendous actor.

????
He was awful in THE MASTER (OSCAR nominated, of course)

I have.no idea who those people are but I will comply.
It's hard to think of film ensembles; much easier to mention tv

They were in Family Ties and Growing Pains, respectively.

Never saw "The Master", but Joaquin was spot on in WALK THE LINE and I have a soft spot for his performance in IRRATIONAL MAN (as irrational as that may be).

Sam Clafin in the most recent adaptation of My Cousin Rachel.

While I realize it would be unfair to compare his performance to that of Richard Burton in the 50’s adaptation, he just came off as wooden next to Rachel Weisz and everything else in the movie.

I feel like maybe that was intentional? I get that some of his lines are a little stilted but I think he was suppose to be scared of Maximus.

I liked Pacino, Keaton and Garcia in The Godfather: Part III.
However, Sofia Coppola kind of ruined that movie for me. She reminded me of cardboard.

Exactly, he was looking for daddies approval, and was intimidated by the love and respect his father had for Maxiumus instead.

I get your point, but in Joaquin's case imo it was the actor who was intimidated, not the character.

As for Coppola, she was terrible, but I also think that Winona Ryder, the original pick for the character, would have been just as out of her league alongside that cast. George Hamilton, despite his limited screen time, was also bad in GF III.

Haya Harareet as Esther in Ben-Hur.

She had the right look for the part but was too amateurish to be believable I thought.

Classic case of the exceptional ensemble cast cancelling each other out, so the Academy just singled out the lone woman in the sea of testosterone to nominate. roll eyes

I always thought Jason Robards
was a weak link in OUTIW.
Bronson...Cardinale... Fonda... Wynn..Ferzetti all great.
Jason, not so much.

Brandon de Wilde in HUD. Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, and Melvyn Douglas were all superb (and received Oscar nominations; Neal and Douglas winning).

P.S. Oscar nominations and wins are not necessarily the chief detrminers in weak links, but it is worth pointing out.
