I rarely watch commercial television but recently recorded a movie on my DVR. When I played it back the film kept jumping back and fourth between letterbox (black bars on top and bottom) and full screen. Is this normal? It was quite annoying. I can't fathom why they would do this unless they felt some scenes would lose its visual impact if not in letterbox. But if that's the case then just broadcast the entire program in that aspect ratio.
My DVD of Tron Legacy has a few scenes in letterbox and the rest in full screen.
Funny you should bring that up. I have the Blu Ray and its the only movie I've ever owned that did that. I've never experienced this before on physical media or broadcast- until now.

Possibly because some scenes were shot in IMAX.
TDK and DUNKIRK bluray present IMAX scenes full screen ( 1:78) and other scenes, filmed in Panavision, letterbox ( 2:35)
The standard dvd has the entire film in letterbox.
Basic cable generally shows everything in that ratio. Premium cable usually, but not always, does too. Some premium movies are shown 2: 35.
What was the film, Sol?
(1) 16:9 screen?- Yes (2) What was the film?- Kong Skull Island on TNT (3) Changing the aspect ratio during the same program is really stupid and annoying. (4) I have the DK on Bluray but never watched it. Guess I never will now.
Basic cable - non- HD is really ' 1:33 aspect ratio..so.maybe they letterboxed it to improve the framing. Panavision films lose alot on.the edge of the frame on tv.
It was shot in Panabisio so maybe some scenes were letterboxed to improve the framing I.e. actors on.the far side of the frame?
It's a horrible film - I devoted an entire thread to its awfulness. Lol!
Yeah pretty stupid film. But the CGI of Kong was impressive which is why I wanted to see it. Good CGI is very rare nowadays. Far better than the CGI in Godzilla: KOM's.
