Quartet Records and Nikkatsu Corporation present the premiere CD release of the Nino Rota score for a Japanese rarity.
Directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara in 1973, Sunset Sunrise (Hi wa shizumi, hi wa noboru) is a “hippie” road movie chronicling the trek that a handful of people take in order to reach Katmandú, the capital of Nepal.
Composed between the two Godfather films, Rota's score is combination of European sensibilities (including light party source music) with the sound of Tibetan music in a curious amalgamation of both worlds. The soundtrack selection also offers a solo guitar version of the main theme as well as a trademark Rota symphonic overture and love theme.
Previously released on a rare Japanese LP that included dialogue and sound effects, this CD marks the first release of the isolated score in full stereo—an obscure gem from the composer’s late career. As bonus tracks, we have included two cover versions, one conducted by Carlo Savina, and the other under the baton of Rota himself in his famous concert offered in Japan in 1977, both courtesy of Gruppo Sugar.
Restored and mastered by Chris Malone, the CD is accompanied by an 8-page booklet including liner notes by Gergely Hubai that discuss the film and the score.

Quartet Records, GDM and Universal Music Publishing Italia present the CD premiere of two cult Giuliano Sorgini scores for rare TV documentaries from the mid-seventies.
Directed by Riccardo Fellini (brother of Federico), both Zoo folle and Gli animali... che simpatia are nature documentaries produced for RAI in 1974 and 1975. Zoo folle showcases how imprisoning animals into small cages and their lives in zoos are really cruelty. The first episode was dedicated to the life of animals in the wild, the second to their capture and the third focused on their babies—with each episode dedicating a segment to how the zoo conditions changed the animal’s lives. The program’s spiritual successor, Gli animali... che simpatia, follows in the same path.
The acclaimed score of Giuliano Sorgini for Zoo folle is a powerhouse of ethnic-flavored eclectic underscoring highlighting the (mostly) African setting of the programs. The list of soloists engaged for individual tracks include flutist Nino Rapicavoli on "Mad Town," percussionist Enzo Restuccia on the bongos of "Ultima caccia" and the unmistakable Edda Dell'Orso on "Red, Old Skies." The music for Gli animai… is more descriptive and melodic, even cheerful; some cues, especially "Orphanage," evoke the sound of John Barry.
Previously released on LPs (both regular and library releases), this is the first time these two scores appear on CD. The project was supervised by Claudio Fuiano and mastered by Chris Malone; the 8-page liner notes by Gergely Hubai discuss the films and the scores.

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar present the world premiere release of the score for a rare mondo film by no less than Angelo Francesco Lavagnino and Piero Umiliani!
Directed by Vittorio De Sisti in his directorial debut, Scusi, lei conosce il sesso? (1968) was one of the earlier examples of the genre with small investigative episodes organized around the topic of human sexuality. Interviews and reconstructed footage are used to explore all aspect of sex from breastfeeding to creating new life—spending an inordinate amount of time on deviations, of course.
The music was composed by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino and Piero Umiliani, whose score favors pop music sensibilities with a preference for bizarre juxtaposition. The score is an amalgam of romantic themes, jazz, bossa nova, shake, afro sound, psychedelia, and even a beautiful song performed by Lydia McDonald.
This CD marks the premiere release of the score, edited and mastered by Claudio Fuiano from stereo master tapes provided by Gruppo Sugar. 8-page liner notes by Gergely Hubai discuss the film and the score.

It is great that the original music tracks of SUNSET SUNRISE have been preserved in Japan. Never thought that we would see a release of the complete Rota score anymore.
On the SCUSI LEI CONOSCE IL SESSO CD it would have been nice to indicate in the track lisiting which tracks are by Lavagnino and which by Umiliani. I hope it is mentioned at least in the booklet.
For many years I have had a copy of the recording sessions myself and therefore know that the Lavagnino session was recorded separately from the Umiliani one. Both composers wrote their own music in quite different styles. Umiliani´s themes for this score have nothing to do with Lavagnino´s at all.
Of the sound clips which can be heard on the Quartet website track 2, 13 and 17 are by Lavagnino. I am also quite sure that track 5 and 19 (this long Finale with 6:30 minutes is really a gorgeous romantic Lavagnino track with choir and just for this track alone it will be worth buying the CD!), probably also the long track 11, are by Lavagnino.

I'm curious how Chris Malone gets involved with Italian soundtracks.
Isn't it atypical for Malone & Fuiano to work together on the same album master?
I also wonder why Quartet bundles their new releases together by nationality.
One announcement will contain 3 new soundtracks by Spanish composers, next announcement might be 2 Hollywood titles whilst a 3rd will be vintage Italian. Can't a Schifrin co-exist next to an Iglesias along with a Ferrio at the same time?
