...who might now be considered ' bad' guys?

BLACK ADDER made me think of this with its unflattering portraits of military heroes like Duke of Wellington- - a servant of British ' imperialism'.

It's a stick wicket here in the states. Locally, folks want.to paint over a mural of George Washington because of his being a slave owner.Streets and place names have been changed; rightfully so in most cases.
' Great' men have been subjected to renewed examinations.

English history is as problematic as ours- colonialism, genocide, slavery etc.

Howzit being handled over there?

The country is so split at the moment that anyone and everyone is either the Devil or the second coming of Christ.
I don't think anybody is gonna agree about anything ever again.

There was a call to remove Nelson's Column a few years ago, as he was a 'white supremacist", but it was from some looney leftie. There's statues everywhere in London, usually people over a hundred years old, & I'm sure nearly all of them had a dark side.

Nelson maintained that Lady Hamilton was instrumental in getting his ships victualled at Naples (see That Hamilton Woman), in order for him to be able to break the French navy at the Battle Of the Nile, in Aboukir Bay. The timing and opportunistic favor to chase the French was in very fine balance back then. Before Trafalgar, he requested of his peers that if anything should ever happen to him they should take care of her for having rendered priceless service to her/their country. Well, the rest is history, as they say.

At the end of the day, some things just never change. I suppose it all depends on when, where and how the service is rendered and who is in the 'appreciation society' according to the prevailing circumstances.

" victualled"? What does that mean?
Did she shag the whole fleet?wink

Seriously , I'm not sure how this relates to the OTT.
A=Are you saying she was denied credit because she was a woman an Nelson was not a hero?

"I thought you were going to call it the Titov?"

"Ah, we changed it last month. People fall out of favor!"

Emma Hamilton is remembered today, and I believe That Hamilton Woman was a personal favorite of Churchill's, as things turned out. You know the framework - Britain fighting on in seclusion for the good cause while everyone else stood and watched. History repeating itself and all that.

To answer your question, yes, she was rubbed out as a matter of convenience for the inconvenience she represented. Can you imagine Nelson's wrath had he been around to bear witness to his request (his codicil or legacy) and his true love being trashed completely out of hand? I gave my life for my country and you did this to us?

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Its not like the Russians were pure. Then again neither were many American leaders.
