Every once in a great while, I stumble upon a film and it's score that turn out to be 'undiscovered gems', at least, by me. When Billy Wilder's film of 'AVANTI!' originally opened, I think I passed on seeing it because I assumed, (incorrectly), it was another 'slapstick' comedy. When I saw the film for the first time yesterday, I find it to be probably Wilder's LAST great film, 'Fedora', notwithstanding. And it doesn't 'feel' like any Wilder film I've ever seen by him. Perhaps because it's set on an Italian Island? The script is by that great team of Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond, and it's got it's fair share of great one-liners, if you pay attention. But the film is really a departure for Wilder. A comedy, but it turns out to be really a great Romantic film, unexpectedly touching, with Julliet Mills and Jack Lemmon giving their all to the film. Actor Clive Revill, as The Conceierge of the Italian Hotel, steals the film, he just seemingly walks away with it under his arm. But it was Italian Composer, Carlo Rustichelli who wrapped the film in a great romantic score incorporating some Italian standards into the music. It would have made a marvelous separate listen, if anyone had released it!

You're joking, aren't you? a) I don't believe there's an original note of Rusticelli in the film - it's ALL standards. b) Quartet released it many years ago. Good luck finding it, as used copies seem to be going for hundreds of dollars. c) I believe I wrote the liner notes.

I've never looked at the booklet thanks for info, I figured it was Rustichelli because his style is extremely romantic a match too what Avanti was & Avanti did sound home-cooking like it is influenced Italian roots, I love the score with its harmonicas, accordion, mandolin, piano textures its so cheerful & beautifully swept orchestra, I need to see the movie too.

Leagolfer, you're extremely fortunate to have the C.D. But I'm happy that you enjoy this romantic score as much as I do. If you haven't seen the film of 'AVANTI!', it's currently on Prime in a very nice looking transfer! The music fits the scenes it was written for like a glove!

Not to rub it in, but I had Avanti twice I sold one last year, if i see it like I did in a 2nd hand store i'll snag it for you Dave. Cheers for the movie - score recommendation I don't know how I missed Avanti, but I did. I see it has Lemmon I love him on screen big-bubbly personality without JL in Glenn Garry that movie isn't the same, & Wilder shooting Avanti pretty cool too i look forward too viewing fun.

What a nice gesture, Thanks! When I read that you found a (second) used copy in a CD store, I nearly fell out of my chair! What are the odds that one copy of a very limited pressing should end up as an unwanted item? I don't expect you'll find another, but the thought is what counts, and I appreciate it. I found a sealed copy on e-bay, but for $350.00+, I could almost fly to England and search the used racks myself!

Avanti was £8, like new off Musicmagpie Ebay UK, that store buys from people who have no £, I've had loads from there, I told member edw - Wagner too grab deals & decluttr_store Ebay US, great gold-mine too for little £, keep your eye out for both stores Dave, you'll find quality & wants you've been after, Good-luck.

I have bought tons from Decluttr but am very down on them now. About eight times on Amazon in the last two months I've bought stuff, they never confirmed the purchase, the discs never were shipped, and then I'd get a notice from Amazon that it was cancelled. And Decluttr's responses to me were inane and inept and lies all. It's a shame - for a while they were my favorite third-party seller.

A bump for this thread: since last Friday "Avanti" is available again from Quartet.

I have no idea why this batch with two outstanding scores gets so little attention, but anybody who missed either score the first time around should check it out.
