GOODFELLAS has to be the.most overrated flic of all- time( Pulliam agrees with me on.this) A wallow in violence and hate.

Not remotely interested in. a 4 HR. Version. Esp. If MARKY praises it wink

So you missed the point of Goodfellas which depicts both the allure and eventual dead-end of crime life? You're a funny guy!

" Best film of the year"
Mark R. Y.

Almost. Second best after OUATIH. wink

Interesting, both films deal with macho/masculine men coming to terms with their aging.

I guess these two movies really speak to me.

Your virility is waning fast. Get used to it.

Mnyah, I'm still 19. I'm at the height of my sexual potency.

Well, you're certainly at the height of your pretentiousness!

They should be burnt at the stake for choosing TBF.

You say the weirdest things some times. GOODFELLAS is just properly rated as the masterpiece that it is, and the 'violence and hate' is just a reflection of its mythological core; what happens when a potential hero rises to power and loses his moral compass in the environment he's in. But hey -- you're allowed to your minority opinion. God knows I have plenty of them in other circumstances.

I thought it was very good overall despite some significant flaws. It's overlong, Pacino is arguably miscast and isn't quite believable as an Irish American and the CGI de-ageing effect is occasionally distracting. But the last hour is powerful and is as good as anything Scorsese has done in the last 20 years.

I dunno. Is it a warning or aa glamorizing?
There is something unseemly about Scorcese's focus on mobsters and gangsters.
And fans of these films don't take them the way you think they do. The live vicariously thru hoodlum life.

I'm a fan of Scorsese mobster movies and I find the way he depicts the nitty-gritty of that milieu really shows how ultimately repellent it is. There might be some fans of these films who get off on the gangster life, but not all of them.

I ain't seen it yet. That whistleblower effect sure do generate an awful lot of wind. Pacino is on YT being quite mature about it. If that's the way it was, fine. If it wasn't, well there's no real surprise, but what's there is something to chew on. Having said that, these guys are past the third act. So, commiserations, bud.

The film makes it clear right from the start that DeNiro's character is telling the tale in his own way. That he claims to have been part of the Bay of Pigs and involved with Joey Gallo's shooting and Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance makes it explicit that he's not necessarily a reliable narrator. So why the controversy that this movie is not a documentary?

I enjoyed THE IRISHMAN very much and did not mind its length -- my wife and I were both amazed that the 3+ hours moved along as quickly as it did. I was a little disappointed with Al Pacino's depiction of Jimmy Hoffa -- he seemed unable to get past being a "Pacino impression" in the role. (Titus Welliver could have done the job if Pacino himself had fallen ill, doing his dead-on 'Scent of a Woman' era Pacino impression.) For me, Joe Pesci was the stand-out -- his performance was subtle and measured, so different from most of his past roles. I had never really considered him a particularly nuanced actor, but for this performance I think he deserves consideration for a best supporting actor award from one or more of the usual award-awarding bodies. DeNiro, "The Irishman," gave a fine performance as always. The make-up effects for the principals as the story went backward and forward in time were surprisingly believable, good job there. If you like Scorsese and his band of merry regulars, this is a credible job, worth seeing.

In my "dream scenario", Jack Nicholson (my alltime favourite actor) would have come out of retirement to depict Jimmy Hoffa once again, leaving Pacino another role in the movie (Nicholson is only 3 years older than Pacino). What a film that would have been!

Speaking of which, it's amazing to me that nobody has talked about De Vito's HOFFA in the interviews I've seen, or Jack's depiction of Hoffa in the 1992 movie.

"They wouldn't DARE!!" wink

I greatly enjoyed Pacino's performance here - I found it to be a nice mix of bombast and poignant anxiety - but I also can see how it wasn't everyone's cup of tea.

It's a good movie, but it plays more like a Scorcese/Mob Film greatest hits than something vital and necessary. It's also too long, and does not earn it's run time.

Better to rewatch Goodfellas or Casino.

I know they tried valiantly to get his hair right, but honestly, Pacino looked nothing like Hoffa.
They should have had Keitel do it--he has a more similar face.
