Yes, Stay-Puft was tied to Ray originally, but once he appeared, everyone knew about him and couldn't miss him or forget him thereafter wink
Hopefully it's a bit of both (nostalgia and story relevant)?
I have a big, fantasy adventure score by Simonsen from the Keep Moving Records label. I'll have to give it another listen.

I thought Stay Puft was a brand in the Ghostbusters universe. Dana had a bag of Stay Put Marshmallows in her groceries complete and when the Ghostbusters storage facility blew, a graphic of Mr. Stay Puft can be seen on the side of a building during the long shot of the Ghostbusters HQ.

Given the woman's scream that Paul Rudd hears in the background, I think a lot of weird things are happening and these little Stary Pufts are just a small part of it. Who knows? Maybe Ray's choice of Gozer's form is still embedded someway.

Unless you subscribe to Ghostbusters 2's logic that everyone DID forget about the first film's events, that will be tricky to back up. At least that doesn't look to be the case for Afterlife since Paul Rudd's character knows about it. I hope Afterlife doesn't forget about Ghostbusters II. That still has my favorite Ghostbusters tech, the Slime Blower!

From the music in this clip, it sounds like this will be an adaptation score using Elmer Bernstein's themes as well as approximating the original score's orchestrations. Very cool! I wonder if Peter Bernstein was an orchestrator on this?

For Ghostbusters II, I've always just told myself that people went from loving them to being upset about all the destruction and sort of lost sight of them saving the world lol...

But I do hope they bring back the slime blowers! I'm also curious if they'll reference the jumpsuits and logo from the 2nd movie. I also like Ecto-1a more.

If the mini-Puffs is actually from the movie … Just … awful. Awful. Awful.

Awful.

Why?

Comments on the film from people who have seen it. I didn't do the research -- I am just copying and pasting something from August:

io9's Germain Lussier:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the sequel fans have been waiting decades for, for better and worse. It’s got great new characters, lots of surprises, & plenty of laughs with just the right amount of nostalgia. I loved SO much of it. However, it’s not without some issues.

Mainly, it packs so much into it, there are big leaps in logic & plot that hold it back from really firing on every cylinder. When it works though? Especially the kid stuff? Damn, it works. Just at times, it doesn’t. Overall though, I cheered, cried, & can’t wait to watch again

Entertainment Weekly’s Lauren Huff:

Ghostbusters fans are gonna be thrilled with #GhostbustersAfterlife I think. I'm afraid to say much more than that, but there's a lot to love. Easter eggs and nostalgia fill just about every frame, but the story still manages to feel fresh and new

Hollywood Critics Association's Scott Menzel:

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the Ghostbusters sequel that I’ve been waiting all my life to see. It is nostalgia done right. A perfect blend of classic Ghostbusters moments with a fresh & unique twist for a whole new generation to enjoy. I got goosebumps. #GhostbustersAfterlife?

Full Circle's James P. Poole:

I saw GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. Sorry, no review. But what I can say is that it’s the best of the series, full stop. Stupendously well written, not leaning too hard on nostalgia, and telling a story better than even the original could muster. A winner in every sense. #CinemaCon

That last review sounds like it's written by a moron who has bad taste.

More films possible; the director said recently:

“We wanted to make a movie that opened the universe to all kinds of stories,” the director and co-writer said when asked about where the beloved and long-running franchise goes after its latest chapter. “I want to see Ghostbusters movies from all of my favorite directors and I hope this movie sets the table for them.”?

My friends, a certain birdy told me a certain late composer's son was at the recording sessions overseeing the usage of his dad's music and it appears the they do a remote session with a certain player who lives in the UK I'm told who plays a certain instrument the the late composer loved....

I'm not saying any names now, but I"m suspect fans of the first film might be happy.....

That's excellent news. Would have been better that he scored it himself, rather than stand around and make sure his father's musical legacy was done right.

Hopefully the director of the eventual sequel, keep Peter in mind.

Fantastic news. The music in the "little Stay Pufts" clip is an excellent and very faithful adaptation of Elmer Bernstein's "Zuul" material, so I am not surprised that it was overseen by Peter Bernstein.

There is talk that Sony is gearing up for "Ghostbusters" to eventually become for them what "Star Wars" has become for Disney. If that actually happens, then we'll get sequels and spin-offs. I would guess - now that we know he was directly involved, to a degree, with "Afterlife" - that there is actually a realistic possibility now that Peter Bernstein may be given the opportunity to score one or more of those projects. Let's hope.

When I spoke with Peter Bernstein a couple years ago he was not optimistic that he would be involved on this, even in this limited capacity. (I had suggested that with the original director's son directing this one, it would make a lot of sense for the original composer's son -- who had worked on the original himself -- to compose it.)

(Been a while since I listened to the episode, but judging from the tracklist we made, it was probably discussed around the hour mark.)

I would LOVE for Peter Bernstein to actually get a Ghostbusters movie to score himself.
