Is DIE HARD a Christmas score...or just a score that happens to take place at Christmas?

    1. Santa Claus The Movie - Henry Mancini
    2. Arthur Christmas - Harry Gregson-Williams
    3. Home Alone/Home Alone 2 - John Williams
    4. Gremlins - Jerry Goldsmith
    5. A Christmas Carol - Alan Silvestri

Die Hard (Michael Kamen) also gets an honourable mention even though it was released in the summer!
Being a massive James Horner fan I have always struggled with his score for The Grinch but finally this year I am really starting to enjoy it so this may be in my top five before long!

    #05. Fitzwilly - John(ny) Williams

FITZWILLY? Never thought of that as a Christmas score, but it's been ages since I saw the film, so it might have some of those elements.

If I were to name five, I'd pick maybe:

John Williams: HOME ALONE 1 & 2 (I count these as one)
Danny Elfman: THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Alan Silvestri: THE POLAR EXPRESS & A CHRISTMAS CAROL (I count these as the same side of a coin too)
    Howard Blake: THE SNOWMAN
    Franz Waxman: A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Honourable mentions to FAMILY MAN (Elfman), JUL I FLÅKLYPA (Haugen), SCROOGED (Elfman), MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (Broughton), THE LION IN WINTER (Barry)

Then there are those scores with a "Christmassy" vibe that aren't necessarily Christmas scores, like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, HARRY POTTER, GREMLINS, old Disney scores etc. Didn't include those in the evaluation.

John Williams: Home Alone (like Thor, I just count 1&2 as one here)
    John Williams: Hook
    John Williams: Harry Potter

Danny Elfman: Edward Scissorhands (Nightmare before Christmas, on the other hand, is definitely a Halloween score in my book, not a Christmas score)
    Jerry Goldsmith: Gremlins
John Barry: The Lion in Winter
Bruce Broughton: Miracle on 34th Street

Whoops, that's already more than 5 just off the top of my head.

I like many of those mentioned and would add SCROOGED to the list. (Edit: which I see has also been mentioned!)

    Tiomkin's "It's a Wonderful Life".
    Addinsell's "A Christmas Carol".
    Mockridge's short-but-charming "Miracle on 34th Street".
And all three appear together on that fine 1998 Telarc disc of re-recordings in sumptuous sound, with the RPO and Ambrosian Singers, with David Newman conducting.

    For television:

Dr. Suess' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) Albert Hague for songs and Eugene Poddang. (Uncredited for score. Wonder why?)

Amahl And The Night Visitors by Gian Carlo Menotti

    Movies:

    Love Actually by Armstrong
The Family Stone by M. Giacchino
    Home Alone by Williams

    A Charlie Brown Christmas
Lion In Winter (It begs a late-night listen by a fire with a cup of wine)
A Miracle on 34th St. (Both Broughton and Mockridge)

I hate Santa Clause The Movie. That is just unlistenable.
