Never get tired of hearing the Frosty the Snowman song on the radio every November/December, thanks of course of Maury Laws. Yet I've only heard a tiny bit of jhis work compared to his overall body of scoring.

Time to rectify this.

"The Daydreamer" (1966)
Part 1: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ge19j
Part 2: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ge1ad

Highlights:

Part 1:
  • 0:21 in.
  • 7:29 in.
  • 9:16 in.
  • 10:42 in.
  • 12:33 in.
  • 14:22 in. Almost eight minutes long.
  • 22:50 in.
  • 23:48 in.*
  • 31:08 in.
  • 34:46 in.
  • 37:02 in.
  • 40:48 in.
  • 43:16 in.
  • 47:13 in.
  • 49:31 in.
  • 52:22 in.
  • 57:18 in.

    * = Why does she have to be told what legs are? The Merking, her dad, has them! In fact, there are so many issues with this for like eight minutes!

    Out-of-context quote:
    "Now, give it to me!"

    Part 2:
  • 0:00 in. Actually begins at the very tail end of Part 1.
  • 1:43 in.
  • 6:44 in.
  • 12:21 in.
  • 14:21 in.
  • 19:40 in.
  • 21:32 in.
  • 23:59 in.
  • 30:04 in.
  • 35:28 in.
  • 3640 in.
  • 42:43 in.
  • 44:46 in.
  • 46:34 in.
  • 50:56 in.
  • 52:08 in.

    Out-of-context quote...
"Chris, your size has nothing to do with your real happiness."

And the instrumental backings of all the songs. I cited some songs, just 'cause.

Percepto Records released a slightly expanded edition with a little more score and an audio interview, but according to SoundtrackCollector, it was on CD-R.

This is the first credit for Laws on his IMDb page. While we know him for a long string of animated specials, this is live action.

    "King Kong" (1966)

There are forty-eight episodes and only one up, so I am going to skip this for now.

    "Mad Monster Party?" (1967)
    "Music composed & scored by"
    Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBkd7rCEcWc
    Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm8lyhWcgGw
    Part 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Acg8P-kylfA
    Part 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZNTxicadwI
    Part 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_6SWRoiYr8
    Part 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSYvlED-Jw8
    Part 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V81oI34E2qo
    Part 8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVsHksLWMIo
    Part 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FItbbk8XQYw
    Part 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBZ0VuYdt-I
    Part 11: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvXeJtMCeFM
    Part 12: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCpnt_R7zQI
    Part 13: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcN1nzlo_lM

    Highlights:

    Part 1:
  • 0:05 in. Sounds like a jazz-y soft crime 1960's drama. If "Austin Powers" had been made in 1967, Maury Laws would have been a good composer choice.

    Part 2:
  • 1:28 in. I can imagine hearing this as Baretta drives around tailing a suspect.*

    * = LOL, og my goodness -- the Monster has a roving eye!

    Part 3:
  • 3:22 in.
  • 4:32 in.
  • 6:14 in. Continues into Part 4.

    Part 4:
  • 1:41 in.
  • 4:28 in.

    Part 5:
  • Abut 1:10 in.
  • 4:08 in.* Continues into Part 6.

"Don't kiss! You always leave marks."

    * = If you really think about it, the Invisible Man is attending the party naked.

    Part 6:
  • 3:32 in.
  • 4:46 in.

    3:20 in: Whoh! He MeToo'ed Frankenstein's assistant!

    Part 7:
  • 7:47 in. Continues into Part 8.

    Part 8:
  • About 6:05 in.
  • About 7:05 in. Finishes in Part 9.

    Part 9:
  • 1:00 in.
  • 1:48 in.

    Part 10:
  • 3:50 in.
  • 6:40 in. Continues into Part 11.

    Part 11:
  • 1:43 in.
  • 6:50 in. Continues through all of Part 12 and into Part 13.

    Part 13:
  • 1:19 in.
  • 7:05 in.

And the instrumental backings of all the songs.

If James Bond was done with puppets, this is the score it would have.

There was a soundtrack, with six cues on it.

    "Cricket on the Hearth" (1967)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLjpXfvrTSs

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 3:32 in.
  • 4:48 in.
  • 5:14 in.
  • 8:22/8:38 in.
  • 13:24 in.
  • 20:20 in.
  • 23:37 in.
  • 27:17 in.
  • 34:50 in.
  • 35:45 in.
  • 36:30 in. A tad over three minutes in length.
  • 40:22 in.
  • 40:54 in.
  • 42:50 in.

37:32 in: I think that bird has that look on it's face because there's a giant wood pole sticking out it's ass.

And the instrumental backings of all the songs.

There was a soundtrack, but only two score cues are on it.

Cool. Always welcome more Maury Laws threads! He is sorely under-repped on CD.

If you aren't already familiar with his HOBBIT/RETURN OF THE KING scores, I highly recommend checking them out. The films themselves are a delight -- RoTK's script has some flaws, but the rest of the film is pretty good, to say nothing of the outstanding Laws score.

Isn't it nice how the main characters stop and listen to the song and dance production numbers of the people they visit? ;-)

In real life, the actor who voiced the Heat Miser, George S. Irving, later in life looked surprisingly a lot of like the Heat Miser. He would later reprise the character in a 2006 animated special that by the reviews, sucked. Maury Laws did not score it.

There has been no release of the score/songs.

Another version of this was made in 2006, with a score by Deborah Lurie (and using a song by Maury Laws and Jules Bass. There was no release of that either, but there is a "Film Music Sampler" promo issued by Costa Communications that contains five cues.

  • 1:43:25 in.

There has been no release of the score/songs.

Certainly not an original theme, heard it before in other scores, but still welcomed to hear.

About 2:20 in: What a James Bond theme song might sound like if Bond was a dinosaur and it was a low-budget TV movie.

Theme song is sung by Nancy Wilson, with music by Laws and arranged and conducted by Bernard Hoffer (this will not be the last "Thundercats" connection...).

With some tighter editing, some removal of the chauvinist behavior and re-casting the lead of the film with Andy Griffith, this might have been somewhat enjoyable.

    Fantastic work!

One of my true Grails would be the score to The Hobbit.

I loved The Last Dinosaur when it came out. I am both terrified at how terrible it must be and intrigued at the fact it stars Richard Boone.

My parents were group singers in New York, and they were singers on a number of sessions he did. My Dad served with him in WWII.

    "my snug puppet hole."

There was a 2LP set of score/songs from the film, and a CD that had the same material but merged tracks. A proper deluxe edition with instrumentals of the songs, is still needed.

The Rosenman-scored film was made by a different studio, which might explain why Laws didn’t score it, and from what I’ve read, Ralph Bakshi (the director of that film) didn’t even want Rosenman to score the film.

Rankin/Bass has finally decided to go with the Disney dead parent back story.

Rankin/Bass actually already took this route in The Little Drummer Boy nearly a decade earlier.

There was another album of Hobbit music. Mostly songs (including one or two that weren't in the movie). Side one was all Glenn Yarbrough and side two was the rest.

I don't know what happened, but I can't find any credits from the rest of 1982 until this. What happened to his career? Did he retire early and decide to do one more thing?

There has been no release of the score/songs.

SoundtrackCollector.com has a mystery entry for something called "Mom & Dad & Me" (1996), but I am unable to find details on what this is.

Some websites erroneously list Laws for the music of "The Last Unicorn" (which is credited to Jimmy Webb).

ASCAP lists him and Jules Bass for cues for "Comic Strip" (an animated collection show, which so far only has Bernard Hoffer listed on IMDb), a theme for an old TV special not listed on IMDb, "Conversation with Betty Ford"; something called "No More Vietnams", something called "Vatican Collections" (signature credits and cues), Videocraft I.D. signature, and something called "Women Like Us" (signature theme).

    No listing on BMI found.

Moving on to a TV series I skipped over (I'll give it it's own post).

I've mentioned this on the board before, but The Bermuda Depths is one of those scores that continues to haunt me to this day. The score uses Vivaldi's Lute Concerto in D major, but the main score and song "Jennie" by Maury Laws is wonderful. I wrote to him a few years ago regarding this score and got a lovely response...an underrated composer for sure considering his body of work.

Well, turns out I didn't miss any of the episodes.

And so concludes, for this time, my journey into his scoring career. Sadly, Laws passed away earlier last year on March 28, 2019, but he had a good long life and lived to be 95 years old.

Doubling back to Bernard Hoffer. On top of doing some work on the Laws scores, he also scored some Rankin/Bass Productions including being the composer on "Thundercats".

Another Rankin/Bass Productions composer was Johnny Marks.

    "The Ivory Ape" (1980)

Feature-length Rankin/Bass film that also has Jack Palance in it.
Doubling back to this film, which was not available when I did this thread.
