SIMIANS & SERIALISM returns in a new, Expanded Second Edition!

...and this isn't just a reprint!

Debuting a track-by-track musical analysis of Goldsmith's ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES score with 32 musical figures!

Pithikos Entertainment is proud to present the EXPANDED SECOND EDITION of the acclaimed book SIMIANS & SERIALISM—the first comprehensive history and analysis of Jerry Goldsmith’s landmark score to Arthur P. Jacobs’ production of Franklin J. Schaffner’s film PLANET OF THE APES.

In SIMIANS & SERIALISM, composer Jerry Goldsmith’s extensive use of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique throughout his film score to PLANET OF THE APES is decoded and deconstructed. Comprehensive analysis of every cue brings to light the strong influences of composers Béla Bartók, Alban Berg, Ernst Krenek, Maurice Ravel, Aaron Copland and Modest Mussorgsky.

In the EXPANDED SECOND EDITION of SIMIANS & SERIALISM, author John O’Callaghan returns to the serial landscape of PLANET OF THE APES and probes deeper into Jerry Goldsmith’s masterpiece with exciting new discoveries. Illustrated with a generous collection of 110 figures that include excepts from Goldsmith’s sketches, diagrams and historical data, this edition also debuts a brand-new, in-depth, TRACK-BY-TRACK analysis of Goldsmith’s score to ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES and a history and examination of Leonard Rosenman’s score to BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES.

Framed with all new research on the production and release of the classic 1968 sci-fi film and its four sequels, SIMIANS & SERIALISM reveals a rich production background and includes fascinating, unknown details making this book an indispensable volume for any fan of Jerry Goldsmith, PLANET OF THE APES, film music or movie history.

I've been eagerly awaiting this since you announced it was coming. I really enjoyed the first edition.

Great news! In addition to the score excerpts, the first edition was chock full of anecdotes about all five films of great interest to any fan. Can't wait for this.

In case the ad-copy isn't clear, this Expanded 2nd Edition contains an all-new, track-by-track breakdown and analysis of Goldsmith's ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES score I made from the composer's hand-written sketches at the Academy Library!

There's also considerable new figures and analysis on “Crash Landing,” “The Search Continues,” “A New Mate,” “No Escape,” and “A Bid For Freedom” from Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES score!

I've also included considerable history and analysis of Leonard Rosenman’s BENEATH score, including 9 figures from the score!

Notable for all APES fans in this Expanded 2nd Edition: For the first time, included are documents that put to rest Budget and Final Costs on PLANET and BENEATH!

This ain't no simple reprint! wink

Ordered! I thoroughly enjoyed the first edition. With so much ancillary details about Goldsmith's career in and around this time period, it almost acted as a biography of sorts, at least just late 60's/early 70's.

I bought the original first edition , however shipping costs to the UK mean itts not financially viable to puchase again . Shame really as the first edition was great.

Just wanted to let everyone know, since I've received lots of questions:

This Expanded 2nd Edition debuts an all new section which contains a track-by-track musical analysis to Goldsmith's ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES score (with 32 figures!), just like the main section on the PLANET OF THE APES score (which is also greatly expanded!). Last year I worked with Jerry Goldsmith's hand-written pencil sketches to ESCAPE for the analysis at the Academy Library.

It also contains an all-new section on Leonard Rosenman’s BENEATH score, with a history and analysis complete with figures from the score. Overall, the whole book has been redesigned and repackaged, including many color illustrations accompanying the analysis.

I just got my copy delivered yesterday. Looks great... can't wait to dive into it. Last year, I got the CD of the POTA score that you did, so it'll be cool to listen to it as I read your book on each cue.

Glad your copy got there safe and sound! I've had lots of people tell me that listening to the cues along with the detailed analysis in the book was a great experience, happy to hear that trend continues. Thanks for your support. And now, I'm off to the Academy Library to study more Goldsmith sketches for a new history and analysis book! smile

My copy finally arrived last night. It shipped from Goodyear, AZ on Tuesday, and I live about 40 miles east in Mesa, so the Post Office thought the best way to get it to me would be to send it to a sorting facility in Los Angeles. This is probably the kind of thing that will be the cause of the apes taking over.
Anyway, I've only had a chance to take a quick skim through it as I had to work last night. There are a lot more music examples, and many of the figures have color highlighting, which surprised me. And of course there's the coverage of an additional two scores. It looks like a great update, and a worthwhile purchase.

Not to be a cynic, but should we wait for the third edition, when the remaining scores will be covered?

Well, Bob, I wouldn't hold my breath. wink

Since the book is primarily about Goldsmith's serial "Ape" scores, this edition has it covered. (I included some of Rosenman's work in Beneath because it was part of the complex drama surrounding Goldsmith's contractual agreement to score the film and subsequent release from his duties to do Patton).

More importantly, Happy 91st Birthday to Jerry Goldsmith!!!
