SEASON 1:

A 1967 series that lasted one season.

It'll be a little slow going as all the episodes are feature length.

The volume is loud on all the episodes.

I forgot to note it on the Supposedly page of my Rejected Film Scores, so I might be confusing this with another TV series, but I believe this is the series I read John Barry say in an interview that he was going to score the pilot of. In the end, he is of course not credited. I assume the one episode Maurice Jarre did was probably the pilot, aired out of order.

That score was so good it was tracked many times on the third season of The Wild Wild West.

I just watched the Cimarron Strip episode, A Knife In The Dark. A Jack The Ripper story set in the ancient west, written by none other than Harlan Ellison, and scored by Bernard Herrmann. Very odd episode. Ellison reportedly did not have confidence in the director's ability to properly do horror.

    https://johnnyalucard.com/2017/04/30/tv-review-cimarron-strip-knife-in-the-darkness/

Cimarron Strip is currently running on the Heroes and Icons Channel.

Only on FSM right now. I guess I should make text backups and go to archive websites.

Seriously, do it! This archiving has to be really involved.
Maybe a part of your rejected scores site?

If the board implodes on itself someday, would be awful to lose this.

    Good show Justin, cheers :-D

We'll all suddenly show up at the MMUK64 forum, surprising Jon.

I hope people are checking out the music; barely anybody saying anything about it, especially that terrific first episode score.

    Finishing SEASON 1:

    "Fool's Gold"
    By: Leon Klatzkin
    https://archive.org/embed/111Pauper2/z116Fool.mp4

This is the only effort by Klatzkin for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 8:01 in.
  • 8:55/17:07 in.
  • 22:14 in.
  • 26:43 in.
  • 38:06 in.
  • 44:30 in.
  • 47:45 in.
  • About 54:20 in.
  • 58:28 in.
  • 1:02:38 in.
  • About 1:05:48 in.

I'm underwhelmed by the effort. I'm enjoying Geller's work far more.

  • 28:15 in: tracked from Morton Stevens' score to the "Gunsmoke" episode "Major Glory". Until the back shot scene, then it switches to unknown tracked score. Then it cuts back to "Major Glory" when we see a group of men on horses pause when they hear a gunshot (parts of two different cues), and stopping at "Here they come".

  • 1:03:16 in: tracked from Morton Stevens' score to the "Gunsmoke" episode "Major Glory". Until 1:03:48 -- them some unknown score cuts in.

  • 1:08:00 in: tracked from Morton Stevens' score to the "Gunsmoke" episode "Major Glory". I don't recognize the score before it.

    "Heller"

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1zvr79
    Alternative link: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x546tcw

    Highlights:
  • 6:10 in.
  • 7:50 in.
  • 9:43 in.
  • 11:25 in.
  • 12:56 in.
  • 19:50 in. And the short cue after the commercial break.
  • 25:47 in. A very pleasant three minutes.
  • 33:40 in.
  • 45:51 in.*
  • 50:50 in.
  • 57:47 in.
  • 1:04:07 in.
  • 1:08:53 in.

This is the first time in the history of any western TV series that I have seen a bad guy have to go back because of a thrown horse shoe.

    "Knife in the Darkness"
    By: Bernard Herrmann
    https://ok.ru/video/2533228284442

This is the only effort by Herrmann for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 2:01 in.
  • 5:00 in.
  • 18:48 in.
  • 33:30/36:31/37:43 in.
  • 39:54/41:49 in.
  • 42:13 in.
  • 52:46 in.
  • 57:35 in.
  • 1:03:03 in.
  • 1:05:40 in.
  • 1:10:21 in.

Thirteen cues from the score was released on the Film Music Society CBS Westerns CD back in 2001. Three "Gunsmoke" scores, and one "Rawhide" score were also on the CD. That concludes any release of original music from the series.

There was also an LP with what I assume has the same contents, and an episode score from "The Virginian" (FYC LP's? Bootlegs? Composer promos?).

    "The Sound of a Drum"
    By: Harry Geller
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2bapys

    Highlights:
  • 28:06 in.
  • 45:45 in.
  • 1:07:40 in.

On a set of scoring from the show, I'd skip this episode score (well, maybe not the last cue cited).

Some of this sounds like it might have been done by John Parker. The weaker thinner side of John Parker.

    "The Blue Moon Train"
    By: Harry Geller
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2b5q2l

    Highlights:
  • 1:33 in.
  • 12:30 in.
  • 21:38 in.
  • 27:27 in.
  • 33:17 in.
  • 3452 in.
  • 43:55 in.
  • 45:12 in.
  • 58:55 in.
  • 1:03:51 in.
  • 1:07:37 in.

And that concludes all episodes with a credited composer.

A couple of three or four CD sets ought to do it (cues I cited).

    ADDITIONAL/UNCREDITED/STOCK MUSIC COMPOSERS:

Culled from ASCAP and BMI. In no special order.

  • John Parker.
  • Walter Scharf.
  • Ruby Raksin.
  • Richard Markowitz.
  • Jack Pleis.
  • Don B. Ray. ( also listed with an unspecified "public domain" title, so I suspect, since Morton Steven is a music supervisor, that Ray did some original material here and there like he did on other series)
  • Clarence Carpenter.
