I thought this may be a good time for us all to hit the reset button and remember why we love film music.

Some people naively believe that the purpose of film music is to support the film for which it is composed.

But this is not the case.

Film music exists to sound good on one's turntable, paired with the right cocktail and complementing one's decor.

I admire the film industry for commissioning so many great albums when they instead could have focused their energy, attention, and resources on the films themselves.

I'm having a lazy day at home today, and I plan to spin lots of soundtracks on LP.

And enjoy some cocktails.

Ha, ha!

Indeed, long live listener-friendly soundtrack albums, however one defines 'listenable'.

HaHaHaHaHaHaHa!

Who listens to Ennio's Bacharach-pop music, anyway? - only YOU do.

LOL. Absolutely. The biggest waste of time is for producers and directors to show composers their films before composers start to compose music. Why bother? wink

Completely disagree. Seeing the film is an essential part of the process for a composer to devise the album.

The purpose of film music IS to augment the film--IN the film.

And if it happens to coincidentally flow nicely as a separate experience for a particular listener, so much the better.
But for the most part (and there are many exceptions), it was not designed that way.

One way of getting around this is to always issue an album of concert arrangements, or at least include some in the score album.
That method has been a goldmine for Williams and I'd like to see more composers take the same route.

IMNSHO.

Yeah, we really need symphonic concert suites of Grant Green's "The Final Comedown" and Piero Piccioni's "The Tenth Victim."

Now listening to Lalo Schifrin's "Bullitt" and am realizing how great a symphonic concert suite would be. big grin What a lost opportunity. big grin

And here I thought I was the only one with no sense of humour.

Humor does nor seem to be your strong suit in this case.
So in lieu of that, how about just explaining the logic underlying your conclusion?

Well this is an obvious joke thread, but you've replied to it as if it's a serious topic.

And my little slightly-"trollish" post had the desired effect, didn't it?
big grin
