I recently viewed the Criterion Edition of Fellini's 'Juliet of the Spirtits', 1965, and I hadn't seen the film since I first saw it at a retrospective in San Francisco in the 80's. This Nino Rota score would 'complete' my collection of his music (for me anyway), one of his most 'Fellini-esque' film scores, full of vibrancy and unusual orchestral flourishes. Hoping Quartet has this in the works, they've released their Nino Rota releases with perfection!

The Rota Renaissance on Quartet has been truly marvelous to behold. I'm up for any other definitive editions they want to produce!

Being one Nino Rota's greatest (and most popular) Fellini scores, I'm guessing a lavish Quartet treatment is probably in the works. Perhaps we will even see it this year, as a tie-in to Federico Fellini's 100th birthday.

Rota’s score for GIULETTA DEGLI SPIRITI has been released on CD more than once.

But what I’d love is a complete WAR AND PEACE.

Even the old Columbia lp is really just excerpts.

BTW: does anyone know if this film ever had overture, entr’acte, or exit cues?

I second this. In fact, I’d even take a remastered version of the LP if nothing else survives as ended up being the case with Romeo and Juliet. The current editions of this score sound just dreadful so this could use a serious remastering.

Yes, CAM re-issued "Juliet of the Spirits" around five times (or more?), but always with the same LP program. If memory serves me correctly, the only Rota score CAM ever expanded was "Casanova," but even that wasn't complete. Quartet has been releasing the Fellini scores complete and with alternates, which IMO has been a godsend. In particular, there was so much missing from "8 1/2" that to finally have all of it still feels like a dream.

Regarding "War and Peace," from what I understand the sonic quality has always been dreadful & this is due to errors made during the original tape recording/mixing of the score. I get the impression that the only way to ever hear "War and Peace" as intended is to re-record it.

Quickly rising to the top of my favorite Felllini films. Dumstruck by the haunting beauty of that dreamy flick.

For me, "La Dolce Vita," "8-1/2" and "Juliet of the Spirits" represent a trilogy of sorts, both as Fellini films and Rota scores.

Maybe it is because I saw all three at the Brattle in Cambridge during one of their Fellini fests; maybe it was because I purchased all three LPs during the early, halcyon days of the lounge/cocktail revival. (These albums were considered lounge/cocktail essentials back then.)

Anyway, I happily bought the expanded "La Dolce Vita" and "8-1/2," and will most certainly by the expanded "Juliet of the Spirits" whenever it is released.

The other Rota scores I love are "Toby Dammit" and the unbelievable "Fellini: Satyricon."

The collected Rota/Fellini works are, for me, the greatest body of composer/director (or series) works. I just adore all of them.

I'm trying to think of another composer/director combo that rivals them in terms of both quality and quantity.

It's a matter of opinion, because, damn, there's Herrmann/Hitchcock, and Morricone/Leone, and Jarre/Lean, and Barry/Bond, Goldsmith/Schaffner, and somebody else will mention the various John Williams. But for me, those Rota tunes are just perfect.

Agree with the Herrmann and Morricone pairings in terms of quality, but there were many more Fellini/Rota films, weren't there?

Enjoying some red wine and listening to 8-1/2 and La Dolce Vita. Nice Friday night music.

I just watched I Vitelloni and was struck by that beautiful score. I see it’s only had a 2-3 minute excerpt released of the main theme. Could one of the labels tackle that, or is it just expanded releases of existing soundtracks that are open?

That would indeed be great. I regret missing Toby Dammit.

Only a few months ago we had talked about I VITELLONI and that the original tapes are long gone. You have to consider that the film and score are from 1953 - from that time only very few things have survived in Italy. So no label can release the original recording anymore:

The only possibility to get the complete VITELLONI score would be a new recording, but apparently nobody wants to do that which is a pity.

Constantly unmentioned remains Mancini/Edwards.

Rota/Fellini may have worked together on many projects, but as much as I love Rota, you also have to see that there's a lot of copy&paste going on.
