Australian label Via Vision Entertainment has informed us that it is launching a brand new label, Imprint, whose mission will be to bring to Blu-ray restored and remastered long requested and previously unreleased films.

Among Imprint's first releases will be a brand new 4K restoration of Byron Haskin's classic film The War of the Worlds as well as the war drama Waterloo and Ridley Scott's period thriller The Duelists.

In Australia and New Zealand, Imprint's releases will be distributed by local partners Madman Entertainment.

I can get the picture up for some reason, but this is a welcome new Blu-ray boutique label. The internet is getting quite excited about a War Of The Worlds Blu-ray release (not to mention Sorry, Wrong Number & I Married A Monster From Outer Space), but the image is wrong about Waterloo, saying it's the first Blu-ray release, it was released in Germany last year. Anyway, the Paramount catalogue seems to be opening up, good news.

Speaking of a Paramount title, we’ve confirmed with our friends at Via Vision Entertainment that their forthcoming line-up of Impact Films limited edition Blu-ray titles will NOT be region locked. That means War of the Worlds (1953), The Duellists (1977), Waterloo (1970), Sorry, Wrong Number (1948), and I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958).

Interesting news. I wonder if any USA company will be inspired to release some of these, although not really necessary unless they would add significant bonus features. The previous bundle of titles were region-free and offered on Deepdiscount, etc.

Since they're releasing War of the Worlds in July, it's possible that Criterion might have some of these. I could definitely see them going after A Place in the Sun.

And being first is not always a win for the consumer. Criterion's version of WoW is suppose to have a color correction that the Imprint version might not have addressed. Luckily their announcements coincided so everyone didn't have to jump on the Imprint.

Yes, it seems that there's a couple of shots of Mars at the start that Paramount made cool & that Criterion has corrected, but that apart, I think it's the same master. Imprint has extras & commentaries that Criterion doesn't have & vice versa, & Criterion's encode can be not so good, & it's region A locked. If I was in America I'd buy the Criterion, but outside it I think I'd be happy with the Imprint. Anyway, great news that Paramount catalogue titles are being released on Blu-ray again. It's The Carpetbaggers & No Way To Treat A Lady for me in this batch. And next month in Australia there's Gene Hackman in Uncommon Valor (1983), & in July, Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard (1974) both from Umbrella Entertainment.

So far it doesn’t look like Imprint is having a perfect streak. Of the ones reviewed so far, it seems Paramount is just giving them old DVD-era transfers (WOTW excepted), with Sorry Wrong Number and I Married a Monster from Outer Space being the worst offenders so far.

I just have to buy The President's Analyst out of that bunch. A great sixties satire, & a great & funny film, with James Coburn as cool as a cucumber, as usual.
