I much prefer the hi-fi re-recording by Lionel Newman to the surviving stem from the actual episode.

I went through the box set booklet to compare track titles and timings. Most are nearly identical, but there are some discrepancies.

First of all, the following cues seem to be absent from the re-record:

Judo Chop
On the Pad
The Good Doctor
Robot Play-On/Doctor and Boy
Message for President

Beyond this, I assume that the track titled "Defrosting/Log Book" on the episode is the same as "Defrosting" on the re-record, considering the timing.

I should note here that I won't have access to a computer for a few weeks, so I cannot conveniently do comparisons with my existing setup.

Can the five missing cues simply be added to the re-record, or is it more complex than that?

Thanks in advance.

"Judo Chop" and "On The Pad" are included as part of track 2 on the old GNP release. My understanding is that this track is entirely sourced from the Lionel Newman re-recordings made in August of 1966. So, if I have that right, and you've got a copy of the GNP disc, you could fill in those two cues from there.

I just gave the GNP track 2 a listen, and I don't think "Judo Chop" is part of it, despite what the track listing says.

I'm giving the GNP set a nostalgic listen though. As much as I agree, the sound quality is much much better than the stems, a few of the cues truly grate on me thanks to the much slower tempo. They just feel off. I remember how disappointed I was when I heard them back in 1995 or 96. The LLL crew did amazing work on the stems to get them as good as they are and I always prefer my scores to sound like they did when I fell in love with them. Same with the Fanderson Space:1999 year two sets. I always go to the mono versions of the cues rather than the stereo. But, we have the choices, so it's great.

So is there any Reluctant Stowaway music on the GNP disc that is not a part of the box set library version? And if so, where did the missing music come from?

No.

-------------------------------------

For the record, the only completely original cues of Stowaway on the GNP box are:

03 - Escape Velocity - Robot Control - Meteor Storm - **Defrosting**

The track title is erroneous, because the "Defrosting" cue isn't included. Plus the last segment, approx 6:52, the part where Don is about to switch off the artificial gravity, (a prelude to The Weightless Waltz) isn't original.

Track 5 - the end of the spacewalk, the "To Be Continued" segment, is "original" but it's actually taken from the end of The Hungry Sea, where Hapgood's ship appears on the radar.

Thanks! So was the same piece of "To Be Continued" music used for both episodes, and GNP just took the better-sounding version? Or did GNP use the wrong track?

The same was used for both, on the GNP box. "Strange Visitor" is slightly chopped.

The "To Be Continued" music (as first broadcast) of Stowaway and Strange Visitor are two different cues, as accurately presented in the 50th box.

Thanks. So to clarify, the "To Be Continued" from "The Hungry Sea" is a different piece of music altogether?

Yes. Reused twice on the GNP box.

Yes. Reused twice on the GNP box.

Thank you!

Apologies for the annoying questions, but to clarify:

All of the re-recorded library versions of "Reluctant Stowaway" music appear on the complete LIS box set, correct? In other words, I don't need to grab any segments from the GNP Crescendo disc?

I should add here that I love that first GNP disc with the three Williams scores. It was a real treat to finally get this music after many decades.

I can't personally answer that. When the 50th box came out I never again touched the GNP set, except for the sound effects portion.

I loathe the un-originals. Felt ripped off, actually.

If memory serves, others have mentioned here that not all of the re-recordings are on the 50th box.

EDIT: Even though it's sonically imperfect, I think they did yeoman's work on Stowaway for the 50th box, and especially after 50 years. We're lucky to have any of it.

You really loathe the re-recordings? I prefer them for the better sonics. From a performance perspective, I do hear differences, but they are not enough to bother me.

Well, I was there at the very beginning, and it was further ingrained during syndication.

I have an audio program that can speed up those tracks but keep the pitch, and they're on average 10 to 12 percent slow!!!

That show quickly degraded into schizophrenia, but the music was always this inner 9 year old's holy grail (never mind the Aurora model that never appeared). "WTF is this?!" I thought on hearing the first few seconds. No mention whatsoever in the liner notes about any of it, as if they said "we got your money, so &*$# you!"

But anywho, the 50th box made me a happy camper.
