“It sounds so fresh and clean. I don’t think I’ve heard it like that since it was originally recorded. Really great quality… very exciting!” - Craig Safan, March 2020.

35th Anniversary Edition transferred directly from Craig Safan's 1/4" tapes.

The movie stars Fred Ward, Joel Grey, Wilford Brimley, Kate Mulgrew and J.A. Preston. The movie was adapted from a popular "Destroyer" series of books by Richard Sapir and Warren Murphy. While the movie wasn't a blockbuster success, the movie did go on to spawn a loyal cult following and a TV movie / pilot (where Roddy McDowall plays Chiun). After getting positive reviews for the quality sound of our Pumpkinhead LP release, we decided we wanted to tackle Remo Williams for vinyl and CD approaching it the same way - finding and using the best sources out there. Previous releases used a DAT, which is fine for CDs but not always the best quality for LP. After meeting with Craig Safan he told us he had tapes we could use for a quality transfer. Johnny Davis transferred the 3/4" tapes Craig provided to us and James Nelson mastered the CD from the pristine 24/192 files. As you can see from the quote above, Craig loved the quality of this transfer and we believe you will too.

You'll be richly rewarded, the score sounds better then it ever has on CD.

Mr. Nelson did his usual great job editing and mastering this release.

God knows the world needed this reissued again. Why the hostility? It's a great score and we are making this for vinyl as well. Why not offer a new master for CD buyers?

Some people just need to be cranky and negative. Best just to move on. It's a great score and always glad to see it back in circulation.

Anyone that wants to buy it again, doesn’t need my permission. But I stand by what I said.

Didnt imply any such thing. Just seems the negativity is a bit over the top. Oh well.

Didnt imply any such thing. Just seems the negativity is a bit over the top. There is enough stress in the world without making fun of something that is being prepped for vinyl fans. Oh well.

Fair enough.

Upon listening to what James did, I was pretty shocked at how well this sounded. I own the two previous versions and have had zero issues with them, love them, glad I got them. But you can hear a difference this time coming from the actual 1/4 tape. I'm very glad we spent the extra funds to get these transferred from tape. I also want to say a BIG thank you to composer Edwin Wendler who for some reason loves doing art design and he's quite good at it. With all the elements we got from MGM etc. he created a brand new alternate cover and really made the original cover pop. The back tray looks great as well and we can't wait to see this baby on vinyl for the 1st time on Remo Red and Liberty Green colored vinyl.

I've missed REMO a couple of times before so it's hard to say no this time, especially with the free CD allowing me to grab HOLOCAUST.

I imagine most folks here are at least somewhat familiar with the score, but for anyone who's not, definitely check out the samples. Chiun and Remo's theme is gorgeous, the kind of lithe, long-lined melody that we don't hear much anymore and was Safan's bread and butter.

The film is as weird as it is wonderful. Both leads but especially Fred Ward were perfectly cast and a joy to see. Ward would also have been a perfect Kraven the hunter as can be seen in scenes of his pre-Remo incarnation. He stole my heart as Remo though, and that's what he will always be to me.
A perfect combination of actors, setting, time it was made and story. It's obscure status only adds to its stature.

Safan's score is also fun. Last starfighter it will not surpass but then again no Safan score will ever be able to do that.
The sad music during the scene where Remo realises that Chun would really kill him, is as sad as it is beautiful. The victorious sections fun that show Safan's unique knack to write a heroic theme that is bombastic and modest, mocking and honestly heroic at the same time. Too bad the heroic sections are so short, so very very short.

To bad that "What if" is not on this issue. It's not a great song but it's Remo's subtheme.
