...that this forum is the unofficial Jerry Goldsmith Fan Club, one need only take a look at the latest poll 'Whose Film Music Brings You Most Comfort During This Global Crisis'.
John Williams (arguably the most famous and successful living film composer) polls a respectable 27 votes*.
Fan favourites John Barry, James Horner and Ennio Morricone poll 15, 8 and 6 respectively*.
Film music Legend Miklos Rozsa bags 7 votes*, as do 'another composer not listed'.
And who leads the pack, I hear you cry!
Well, Jerry Goldsmith, of course, with...wait for it...93 VOTES*!!!
Which is almost half the votes in total. Three times as many as John Williams!!
Have these people never heard S*P*Y*S!!!! wink

*at my time of writing

There was never any doubt, but a lot of Goldsmith fans here make it out to be.

Yup, Jerry Goldsmith has been the king of the castle here since I first discovered this site (a long time ago): a worthy champion smile

I'm cool with this even though I only have one Goldsmith cd, which happens to be one of the best ever scores, universally loved by most folks in these parts (STtMP of course). Not because I don't like him. Far from it, I love his music. There just happens to be a lot more from other composers that beat him for me when it comes to purchasing, and the power to do it.

In the end he is a towering talent and a classic film composer. So fair dos to him and his fans, of which I count myself.

I only voted for Goldsmith because Jerry Fielding wasn't on the list.

And Desplat, Legrand, Poledouris, Portman, Rota and Waxman don't have ANY votes!! (last time I checked).
Zero!!
Oh, the humanity!

Jerry Goldsmith is probably my favorite composer and yet this overkill irritates me. But the amount of overkill on Williams has also been an irritant over the years. Which is why I took the Morricone moniker. Ennio has been, continues to be and will continue to be the most underrated, underappreciated and under heard composer GIANT around. At least here in the US. The proof came at our last year's Morricone concert, where practically EVERYBODY did not know 80% of what we played, at all.

So many of his great scores have been lavishly re-released in these past few years plus the generally bleak outlook for traditional orchestra film music in modern movies, it's not hard to see why he still has so much popularity in the community.

Plus I just like the music. It's damn good.

Whilst I have had time, like most of us, to listen to more music and probably scores that we haven’t played in ages, I always end up revisiting James Horner because he is without question my favourite composer.
But JB, JW and JG have been getting plenty of airtime as well.

There is a thread about Loch Ness v The Water Horse which inspired me to play these two scores today having not heard them for years. Love them both but Ness wins!

James Horner wins outright though....

I voted for John Barry but Goldsmith was a fantastic composer and I am also listening to quite a few of his scores at this time.....

I suppose this thread has encouraged more people to vote smile

Hans Zimmer...only 2 votes!!! That is surprising.

The poll question may elicit answers that are not the same as "favorite composer."

I'm not surprised that Goldsmith is winning the poll, but I am by how much, considering how idolized Williams is around here. I am surprised that Barry is in 3rd place; while he has fans on these threads, he does have many outspoken critics. I voted for him, but I could just as easily have voted for Rota, because there is no series of cds that I enjoy more than the Rota/Fellini collection.

Not happy that Lalo Schifrin was not on the list.

Surprised by Morricone's comments that Morricone--the composer, not the poster--was underrated. By whom? Maybe by the composer branch of the academy awards. I think of all the great film composer Morricone is one of those very few--Rota and Herrmann are 2 others--that have garner great respect in the film music, classical, and pop music fields.

Really? I didn't know it was that bad. My wife and I knew all but one piece. I guess us real Morricone fans are bit more fanatical. But Goldsmith is also my #1.

And yet Goldsmiths greatest score "The Secret of NIMH" is so ignored by his rapid fan base.

Not by me.

Hey, I'm just voting JG because Star Trek: The Motion Picture is my happy place. Star Wars is right behind it.

Jerry Goldsmith is probably my favorite composer and yet this overkill irritates me.

Same here. He's ONE of my favourites, but the degree to which fans defend him at all costs irritates me some times. I still remember the flack I got for DARING to criticize Goldsmith's use of electronics, especially from the 80s onwards. What an outrage! big grin

By now everybody should be aware of who "the one and only" is. There hasn't been anyone like him, there won't be anyone as him.

Especially in the light of nowadays crap music in films, Goldsmith will continue to be on pedestal, well deserved and more than ever.

You can EAT YOUR HEART OUT!! That's it!

The poll is actually missing a great many of my favourite composers, whose music I play all the time, such as;
David Newman
Bruce Broughton
Lee Holdridge
John Scott
Pino Donaggio
Jerry Fielding
Patrick Doyle...
hell, even Danny Elfman didn't make the list.
I think people just voted for Goldsmith out of desperation wink
