In honor of Disco Stu, Jim Phelps and "Saturday Night Fever".

But a couple of conditions:
One, they had to actually be played in discos, and two, try not to veer TOO off course into what might more properly be described as Funk or R&B (I realize sometimes the distinction can be pretty this).

In no particular order...
01) You Should Be Dancing (Bee Gees)
02) I Feel Love (Donna Summer)
03) More, More, More (Andrea True Connection)
04) Fly Robin Fly (Silver Convention)
05) Born To Be Alive (Patrick Hernandez)
06) Funkytown (Lipps Inc.)
07) That's The Way I Like It (KC & The Sunshine Band)
08) Rasputin (Boney M)
09) Disco Inferno (Trammps)
10) Knock On Wood (Amii Stewart)

This was a lot harder than it looked.
It was murder to leave off stuff like "TSOP" or "Rock Your Baby".
I guess I played it pretty safe--not a lot of obscure or hardcore stuff there.

Oh, almost forgot--it has to be between 1975 and 1980!

I'm not sure what my top 10 are, but I would add...

"Boogie Wonderland" (Earth, Wind and Fire)
"Don't Stop the Train" (Phyllis Nelson)
"Shame" (Evelyn "Champagne" King)
"Come To Me" (France Joli)
"So Many Men, So Little Time" (Miquel Brown)

This could go on for days...

I know, right?
It's not like I have anywhere else to go.

(Good call on the EWF.)

Probably the really good stuff is the earlier (1972-75) quasi-underground Latino club tracks. There is a recent book, "The Disco Files 1973-78" by Vince Aletti, a columnist for Record World in the 1970s, who compiled DJ top ten playlists from around the U.S. It would take a lot of time YouTubing some of the lesser-known disco songs on those lists, but there are definitely some winners there.

Definitely have to mention "Jive Talkin' " by the Bee Gees. Oh, man, the bass on that one is so fat!

To avoid the "is it Disco?" argument, I will choose only those songs that are blatantly, obviously disco.

01. If I Can't Have You- Yvonne Elliman
02. How Deep is Your Love- The Bee Gees
03. Can't Give you Anything (But My Love)- The Stylistics
04. The Hustle- Van McCoy
05. I'm Your Boogie Man- KC & the Sunshine Band
06. Le Freak- Chic
07. Heart of Glass- Blondie
08. Stayin' Alive- The Bee Gees
09. Star Wars Theme- Meco
10. Don't Leave Me This Way- Thelma Houston

*Changed a few to adhere to the 1975-80 time frame.

Even if I loathed disco, I would still concede that Barry Gibb is a genius.

There's this bit that they do right at the end of the song that cracks me up.
The video almost cuts it off.
I predict big things for these boys.

Slapstick comedy and songs about oral sex--to the typical FSMer, they're the same thing--brings out the best in everyone.

I never understood how they were not given their own variety show when they were young.
Pros: look what it did for The Hudson Brothers.
Cons: look what it did to The Hudson Brothers.

Thanks, Octoberman! Great thread!
Not in order, don't know that I can rank them, except for Groove Line - my #1, I think:

Groove Line (Heatwave)
I Can’t Stand the Rain (Eruption, with Precious – Yes, she was! Wilson)
Boogie Wonderland (EWF)
Disco Inferno (The Trammps)
Shine a Little Love (ELO)
Run Like Hell (Pink Floyd)
If I Can't Have You- Yvonne Elliman
Night Fever (The Bee Gees)
Close Encounters – Disco Version (John Williams)
Alien (Nostromo) - not that crazy about the FX, but love the beat

Put up my Jackfu with Disco Fro avatar again - limited time only! wink

Pink Floyd: kills a disco thread every time! wink

Other disco songs you may enjoy:

"Turn the Beat Around" Vicki Sue Robinson

"A Fifth of Beethoven"- Walter Murphy

Did Captain and Tennille ever do a disco song? They were pretty effing popular circa 1975-78.

Most of the ones I like have been posted.

Seems like the most appropriate disco song for today is Gaynor's I WILL SURVIVE. I have always liked this song.

Some of you may not consider ITS RAINING MEN a disco song, but I hear the disco beat, and I've always loved the song.
