I know the vinyl was mentioned but do we actually know the improvement of sound over the original CD release? The original had a lot of hissing noise and quite low volume.

I don't have the original to compare it to but I'm not detecting any hissing on the new cd, and volume-wise it has high dynamic range - the low parts are low, the loud parts loud. It sounds good.

I wish I had a good reason to buy this album again, if just to compare sound quality. I have three copies already! (I probably tossed my original, it was so "well-loved", so I may be down to just two. I remember getting a replacement plus a signed copy from that Varese event a decade ago...)

I wonder if this was put on sale because they found out all the copies of the vinyl are coated in some sort of semen-like glaze. You know, I for one don’t want some corporation pre-tributing their products for me. I mean, isn’t that a decision I get to make??

While it has been confirmed that this was remastered for both Vinyl AND CD, it is unclear what that process was like, and if it resulted in any improvement in sound quality on CD.

There are a few takeaways from this thread so far:

QUALITY OF THE ORIGINAL
Matches the same experience I had which is that the original was quiet and poor quality.

Not recommended for car listening, as you can't hear SHIT.

Yes the original sound is--very distant. I remember riding that volume control when I used to listen to this CD on the regular.

The original has AWFUL sound :-(

I really enjoy the score, but agree about the sound quality.

WAS THE CD REMASTERED?
Both the Vinyl and CD were remastered. It is not known how, if at all, the original elements were retransferred, which would make a big difference.

BryonDavis: We have the original sources. We remastered the CD and Lp from them. So whoever said that never consulted with the producers.

NEW CD SOUNDS THE SAME AS THE OLD ONE?
Not a lot of info to go on here but it seems like the new CD doesn’t sound any different from the old CD, and the vinyl only sounds “louder”.

To those of you who have both, is there a significant sound difference between the 1996 release and the 2020 release?

Steffromuk: Only for the vinyl which benefited a remastering. the CD is exactly the same as the 1996 one.

Erik Woods: As for the difference in audio. I do have the LP digital files sent to me by Varese. When I compare them to the original CD release there is a significant change, mostly in volume. I don't hear any other audible changes. When I compare the opening track on the album there is a 2.7db difference. It's still a very dynamic mix. I mean, the quite bits in Imperial City, for instance, hover around -33db, while the peaks are right up to -2db, -1db.

How is this conflicting? It's final.
Someone misspoke on a facebook post, and it created a little wave of misinformation, which still, apparently, has some legs in it. Misinformation really is the stock to back these days.

Updated to reflect that the CD and Vinyl have both been remastered.

Clarified that with the information we have so far, the Vinyl sounds better than the original CD but the new CD does not sound any different from the original CD...

Thanks Jurassic T. Park for the summarization.
I personally am not convinced with the official claim that the CD reissue was remastered. Or if it was, they failed fixing the extreme dynamic issue.
