I already have a few of his Bonds, and just ordered HOWARD THE DUCK and KING KONG. I've got a ways to go, but I'm looking forward to it!

Good place to start, henry! (I assume you're getting the Intrada Howard the Duck and FSM King Kong, I hope?)

Next up I would recommend The Last Valley, The Lion in Winter (get the Silva City of Prague re-recordings of these two if you want them complete, but the OSTs are also good), and the LLL edition of Dances With Wolves.

Yavar said it best, the Silva set "Classic Scores" is a great set. It features most of his best scores like Last Valley and The Lion In the Winter. If you can't find this, long OOP I would buy the latest Quartet release of The Last Valley. If you can find Intrada's copy of The Wrong Box, this is a good listen. I was too late in the game to buy this one. John Barry is one of my favorite composers behind Jerry Goldsmith and Ennio Morricone but I actually have more compilation albums from him.

By tomorrow im sure you will have 50 different recommendations! But equally, you can rarely go wrong with a barry score, Henry. Bond, last valley, ipcress, like the guys have said, Recently i remembered how much i loved the Quiller Memorandum and dug it out again.

And Zulu is class.

The FSM King Kong and Body Heat are essentials.

I thought this was a great, economical, and representative set.

If you are in the states or UK and use a marketplace seller you can get it for under $35 shipped.

Walkabout in that set is almost complete, otherwise the recent Australian edition was superlative also (but this may be OoP now).

I'd also highly recommend

https://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/28254/THE-BETSY/

https://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/12871/SOMEWHERE-IN-TIME/

https://www1.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/561/DEADFALL/

I'd rec Robin and Marian and The Dove , but it looks like both may be OoP now as well- but R & M is available complete on the Classic Film scores that Yavar suggested.

The collection I linked to (using the same recording sessions as the above collection?) doesn't contain any one complete score (I believe, but could be wrong- and Walkabout is mostly complete just lacking the songs), but it samples from many more things all the way from Beat Girl and the Girl With The Sun In Her Hair to themes from Enigma and Scarlet Letter, with just about everything else significant he worked on at least represented in between (no HTD though).

for one of his more un-Barry-like sounding endeavors.

Dances with Wolves is essential for any Barry fan, and the LLL is the last word as usual.

My name is Barryfan, so my recommendations are twice as valuable as these other folks. LOL

Anyhoo..... you need to get his two CDs he put out that were NOT scores. The Beyondness of Things and Eternal Echoes. They are quintessential Barry, especially if you love the slow, eloquent stuff he put out the last 10-15 years he worked.

As my good friend Bill almost said, anything John Barry wrote in the 1960s is essential to a collection of his music. His burst of white hot creativity during that decade is astonishing in both its scope and its influence.

Buy all his CDs. It's John Fucking Barry. No one comes close to him. No one!
I have +50 his CD film scores and still looking forward to catch some of them which I don't have.

If you seriously consider collecting, you should go for these two box sets:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/John-Barry-Revisited-2009-12-01/dp/B01K0CAGGK/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bees-Knees-EMI-Years-1957-1964/dp/B004NW5RYA/

Not the most essential stuff in Barry's discography, but these recordings have been covered endlessly on other releases and if you don't go for these two definite sets, you will have plenty of duplication in your collection (most likely with inferior sound quality as well).

For the 'John Barry Revisited' box-set, we can find it at a much cheaper price.

Yes, I second that! Buy 'em all!...

You're gonna read many posts with great choices, from collections (like the Silva re-recordings) to single score CDs - very much expected ("Dances with Wolves") or less so ("Swept from the Sea" - ah, good one). But you can't have enough JB, Henry! I don't have enough JB and there are around 80 Barry discs on my shelves!
