North by Northwest (original from Rhino)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (re-recording with Elmer Bernstein)
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (original from Varese)
Fahrenheit 451 (Varese re-recording with McNeely)
The Trouble with Harry (Varese re-recording with McNeely)
Psycho (Varese re-recording with McNeely)
Cape Fear (the Scorsese version conducted by Bernstein)
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Varese re-recording with Debney)
Twilight Zone Vol. One (original from Varese)

While not 100% Herrmann, The Egyptian (co-written by Alfred Newman) is highly recommended.

Help Lukas Kendall & SAE out and buy The Wrong Man.

It's a Hitchcock Herrmann that is still not sold out.

[Joy in the Morning and It's Alive are also still in stock]

Two years ago I went through a year-long Bernard Herrmann journey, playing everything I had--which was a lot--plus whatever else I could get my hands on. If I were starting from scratch I would get:

1) the box set of the Concert Suites. Either get the set or get the individual albums that were on Phase 4 with excellent sound. BH re-recording suites from his scores. The albums were:

Music From the Great Film Classics
The Fantasy Film World of BH
Music From the Great Movie Thrillers
The Mysterious Film World of BH

2) Charles Gerhardt's Citizen Kane, the Classic Film Scores of BH

3) Elmer Bernstein's re-recording of The Ghost and Mrs Muir

The collections give you well-recorded and well-performed and generous suites of so many Herrmann scores. Plus, they'll give you an idea of where to go from there.

Some of my favorite scores not represented on any of these collections are Obsession and Cape Fear.

You have to get these:
1. BATTLE OF NERETVA (Tribute)
2. DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Fox or Varese)
3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER (Varese)
4. JASON & THE ARGONAUTS (Intrada)
5. MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (Tribute)
6. OBSESSION (Music Box or Tadlow)
7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD (Prometheus)
8. TAXI DRIVER
9. FAHRENHEIT 451 (Tribute)

The Tribute recordings/CDs are just great.

If you can track the McNeely Recording of NORTH BY NORTHWEST then do so. Terrific performance and essential.

Also another great compilation is BERNARD HERRMANN FILM SCORES cd conducted by Esa Pekka Salonen.

Herrmann has been my favourite composer for over 30 years now and I would like to agree with Konga and recommend some of his later scores to widen your range (you dont have anything post 66). Obsession is my favourite Herrmann score and there are still copies about. I also love the Bride wore Black. Taxi Driver, Its Alive are different from the scores you have so could be worth looking at.

Thanks for the suggestions. How is the La La Land Edition ($16) compared to the Fox edition ($37 onAmazon)?

I never owned the Fox edition so I can't make a comparison. However, I have the OOP Kritzerland edition (which is the same master as the LLL), and it sounds quite good and has more material than the Fox edition.

Day Earth Stood still
North by Northwest Original

and strongly recommend Elmer Bernstein's recording album 'Citizen Kane >> Taxi Driver" from 1991. Great performances + the Storm Clouds Cantata although not Herrmann original, he is know for from 'Man who KNew too much"

also look for any album (re-recording) that has the Prelude from 'Man who Knew too much" Herrmann's film version is the best, but doesn't exist on CD (yet?)

Two of my favorites seldom mentioned:

THE KENTUCKIAN

KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES

I'm actually the first person to suggest Beneath the 12 Mile Reef? It's one of my favorites of his.

https://www.amazon.com/Beneath-12-Mile-Reef-limited-CD/dp/B00VZ5D5BA

If you can track down the Fox box set without having to sell your house to obtain it, I recommend it. So much goodness. But a lot of those scores have been rerecorded beautifully by a variety of people.

Is Herrmann one of the most re-recorded film composers? Could just be my interest in his work...

If you like THE 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER (Herrmann in Neo-Classical mode), then you'll love WILLIAMSBURG.

It comes with THE KENTUCKIAN, another marvelous Tribute CD.

Tack the Cobbler is right. I can't believe you don't already have THE EGYPTIAN in one form or another, including various OSTs and Morgan/Stromberg's Marco Polo.

I don't think anybody's yet mentioned the only one that got Benny an Oscar: THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, (available as a concert suite).

Are you limiting yourself to movie works? If not, he wrote a couple of splendid chamber works, ECHES and SOUVENIRS DE VOYAGE. His concert suite WELLES RAISES KANE is a delight.
