Just listening to Episode 17 of Goldsmith Odyssey featuring Leigh Phillips talking about reconstructing episode scores for albums Thriller and Thriller 2. This podcast was released in Feb 2019 and Thriller 3 was mentioned as a possible Kickstarter project to cover the remaining Goldsmith episodes and padded out with some Morton Stevens scores for the series.

I just searched Kickstarter but could not find any such project. As this is now a year and a quarter past does anyone have any info they can add ?. Is this really likely to happen. There doesn't appear to be any Goldsmith project underway.

I really would like nothing more than to run a KS for Thriller 3 (in point of fact, I complied the cue, and instrument, lists a few months ago - these include 3 Stevens scores). The only thing that's been preventing me from looking at it is my workload; for the last year or so it has been quite relentless.

There are a few things which need sorting out before anything can happen; such as a quote from James (that's if he's interested in finishing the "cycle", of course - if I'm honest, I wouldn't be keen on recording with another team, or ensemble), and blocking out the time to do it.

We'll have to see how it goes - but never say never with this one.

The Tadlow recordings of Jerry Goldsmith's Thriller scores are true gems; count me in for round 3. They scores themselves are every bit as good as Goldsmith's more famous film scores and belong to the finest TV music, while the recordings are top notch.

If THRILLER 3 includes any Stevens material, I'm in...:-)

Maybe you could also include the cue from The Poisoner that you regretted not including originally ?.

Probably not - the albums were never really designed to be comprehensive; simply representative. We’re happy, overall, with the way 1 & 2 turned out, so won’t be going back to plug any gaps (otherwise we’d have to lose some vol 3 material in order to accommodate)

I'm sure Leigh had a really tough time deciding what cues to leave off of multiple scores ("The Poisoner" is just the only time he's been prompted to reflect on any regrets publicly, because of the podcast where we covered unreleased music). Since it's not at all practical to spend the budget to record all of Jerry's Thriller scores in more complete form (I think we are insanely fortunate to have gotten a single volume of newly-recorded Thriller material, as Clark basically observed in our recent podcast on "Well of Doom"), I think the best hope for any cues left off the Tadlow volumes is a release (or series of releases) for the original recordings, which are likely to still survive in the Universal vaults.

I really like the first two volumes and would probably pony up for a volume 3, even as a Jerry Goldsmith/Morton Stevens combo deal.

I would pony up ESPECIALLY if it's a Goldsmith/Stevens combo. (And I'd hope it includes"Pigeons From Hell.")

Figured this thread was worth a timely bump as folks start to get their copies of the new Intrada Goldsmith/Stevens Masada. I realized that I never posted the 2021 Goldsmith Odyssey interview with Leigh, where we briefly check in on Thriller Vol. 3 (which has scores and specific cues already selected, and which would be half Goldsmith, half Stevens):

And as my friend W. David Lichty pointed out elsewhere, at about 3:11:56-ish in the regular Goldsmith Odyssey episode connected to that opening interview, Leigh talks about the surprising sales of Thriller Volume 1:

What’s the deal with a release of a COMPLETE ORIGINAL THRILLER CD box set with Goldsmith, Stevens and Rugolo?

Nobody seems to talk about this of late.

Well, when I spoke with Bob Townson at length a couple years ago, he seemed to think it was likely that the original recordings survived somewhere at Universal. If they could be located…

I’m not sure a complete box set is very feasible though…it would probably be 20 discs or more, and Thriller doesn’t exactly have the following of Star Trek. A Twilight Zone complete box set might be one of the few remaining shows from the era where a giant box set would be feasible. (Not that I wouldn’t wish it otherwise.)

When Varese released The Twilight Zone on LPs way, way back, they made sure to spread the composers out, so that if you wanted just the Goldsmith ones you'd have to buy them all. Maybe a box of Zones or Thrillers, with the surviving recordings spruced up as much as they can, would now make more financial sense to box by composer. They certainly wouldn't lose money on Goldsmith boxes. Spreading them out might make it less lucrative, considering the work involved. I don't know that for a fact, I'm just pushing for Goldsmith boxes.
