The real sound of the Seventies

Lalo Schifrin - Gil Mellé – Dave Grusin – Jack Elliott and Allyn Ferguson

There have been many fantastic releases over the years from the Schifrin/Grusin catalogues spanning many decades, sadly not so much from Mr Mellé and pretty much nothing from the duo ‘Elliott & Ferguson.

Having been a huge fan of the film and TV scores of all of the above, especially the many contributions to films scores in the 1970s - - What would be your most desirable future releases to hopefully see the light of day.

Mines are:

Lalo Schifrin

St Ives (1976)
Escape (TV Movie 1971)
Hit! (1973)
Institute for Revenge (1979)
Egan (1973)
Starsky and Hutch (Season #1 scores) 1975

Gil Mellé

Columbo Scores (x4 1971/72)
Bone (1972)
The Six Million Dollar Man – Pilot (1973)
Tenafly (4-part TV Series 1974)
Kolchak: The Night Stalker (7 episodes 74/75)

Dave Grusin

Death Squad (TV Movie 1973)
Halls of Anger (1971)
Baretta TV Series Scores x3
The Nickel Ride (1974)
Midnight Man (1974)

Jack Elliott and Allyn Ferguson

Birds of Prey (TV Movie 1973)
The Bait (TV Movie 1973)
Hijack! (1973)
Roger and Harry; The Mitera Target (1977)
Charlies Angels TV Series
Starsky and Hutch scores

Anytime the subject of future Universal Heritage possibilities comes up, I totally blank on how great a Baretta collection would be.

Also, beside Melle and Fielding, who else scored Kolchak?

HAL, if I'm being really strict about this, I'd narrow things down... And thus -

Jack Elliott and Allyn Ferguson
----------------------------------
I I was never honestly very struck by either of their music, and even less so when they collaborated. So I'll pass, although Gene Lees has spoken very highly of Ferguson's work, so I must be missing something.

Dave Grusin
-------------
I love Grusin a lot, but I think just about everything that I "know" of his has been released. I'm sure there are some gems out there which I'm not familiar with. Pass.

Lalo Schifrin
--------------
Yeah man, Lalo. Again, being really strict, the only film scores I REALLY want released are CHARLEY VARRICK and THE MANITOU. Mind you, HELL IN THE PACIFIC would be tempting. And I think BLINDFOLD was him, wasn't it? But I'm getting carried away. Let's be serious.

Gil Mellé
----------
Absolutely everything! Let's not hold back here! Everything he wrote for the big and small screens, from the late '60s onwards. But being realistic I'd draw a line at about the year 1981. But from before then, absolutely everything.

Let's be serious a 2nd time and say a CHARLEY VARRICK CD would be unbelievable. It's also unbelievable that it remains unreleased as it is the composer's best score [ which is available ] but nobody is interested in releasing it. Great shame.

Really? Mine was a kind of "fantasy" list. I thought it had been established that the tapes of CHARLEY VARRICK had been lost, at least most of it. What's the update, man?

Anytime someone wants to kick out a competent re-recording of things like Varrick or My Bodyguard, I'll be first in line with my money.

Goldenberg - Fielding - Pat Williams and Charles Bernstein were in my next list - :-)

Charlie Varrick, how could I forget that one, you can even hear some elements of CV in Schifrin's "Most Wanted" pilot score - would make an excellent double feature with "St Ives" I think!.

@Graham Watt - Agree Re-Gil Melle - everything from 68 to 81 will suffice - the sound of my Sunday afternoon -

I picked up a Reel to Reel Tape in LA some years back which featured the unreleased score to "Columbo - Death lends a hand" 71 - also in the haul was a copy of a Reel Tape of Billy Goldenberg's NBC Pilot score for "Rod Serling's Night Gallery" 1969 and some other Night Gallery episode, cant remember what right now.

Hal.
