Starsky and Hutch (Spelling-Goldberg Productions) TV series 1975-79

I have often thought the series music would make a fantastic 4 season double cd collection - It was a successful program for ABC in the 70s – The score featured a mixture of “well-known artists “sought after by many soundtrack collectors” such as “Lalo Schifrin, JJ Johnson, Mundell Lowe, Shorty Rogers, Mark Snow, Alan Silvestre, Tom Scott, Elliott and Ferguson – also featuring music by Murray Macleod & James Prigmore, Andrew Kulberg, Bill Marx, Tommy Vig and JAC Redford.

Does anyone have any information as to why the music from this series has never been released? Is it something maybe to do with Sony Entertainment who own the rights of Spelling-Goldberg Productions – Do the actual recording still exist?

The only recording i have managed to find is two reel-tapes for ABC television with themes from various TV programs of the year which were circulated around TV studios and used for radio sports - the reels have the Starsky and Hutch theme for Schifrin’s menacing season one theme and Scott’s reworked theme for season 4 (both without sfx)

Many thanks in advance

Hal,

Does anyone have any information as to why the music from this series has never been released?

This is a question that I have been asking myself again and again in relation to certain television series for several years and which one could generally ask for hundreds of television series.

There was a time (when the legendary STAR TREK - TOS CD box was released) when I thought it was possible, that most of the TV series, that are important to me, could also be given a corresponding release in the coming years.
But the following years opened my eyes to reality very quickly.

It is not just a question of rights and available music recordings.
There are also two things to consider.

1) How much demand is there really for such a music release?
The past decade has unfortunately taught the various CD labels often enough that the optimistic assessment of fan demand was unfortunately wrong (The STAR TREK - NEXT GENERATION Ron Jones Box and the LOST IN SPACE Box).
I am glad that LLL continues to release the old Irwin Allen TV series soundtracks, at least in a simplified and therefore inexpensive form.

Added to this is the finding, that the vast majority of all TV soundtrack releases in the past more than 30 years have related to the rather fantastic genres (SF / Fantasy / Horror).
There has always been the most demand here and therefore the greatest sales opportunities for the CD labels.
Other TV genres, like crime, western, comedy, etc., were only ever represented with a soundtrack release in exceptional cases.
This has only improved slightly in recent years (Quinn-Martin-Collection-Vol. 1 / 21 Jump Street / The Wild Wild West).
I wish that is a sign of a general improvement in these generes.
A possible soundtrack release of THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO by LLL is expected by many fans.
But even then I fear no significant improvement in the overall situation!
Because of 2)!

2) Although all the major soundtrack labels are trying to release TV soundtracks, it is unfortunately completely unthinkable, that all the hundreds of TV series of the last 50 years, that deserve a soundtrack release can one day be considered for a soundtrack release.
If you add up all TV series releases of the past 30 years, that makes up only a tiny fraction of all existing TV series.
And all the soundtrack releases of the next few years, will not be able to change the overall situation in percentage terms.
And since new TV series are constantly being produced, one cannot even seriously consider that all CD labels together have the chance to start a kind of catch-up hunt.
So it has been clear to me for several years, that there was never a chance that every fan wish could come true.
And if you consider the ongoing development of the waning interest in music in CD format, and the increasing age of soundtrack collectors and their natural demise, then will be the release of TV series from the 60s and 70s, more and more increasingly unlikely in the future.
Not quite impossible, but definitely less frequent.

I am happy about every release, because it has been clear to me for several years, that this will only be available for a few of the old TV series in the end.
My personal top favorites from the field of crime series are:
- REMINGTON STEELE
- THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO
- COLUMBO(70's scores)
But I would also buy most of the other crime series soundtracks if they were released.

As I keep saying:
Every soundtrack released makes my life richer, but every not released soundtrack doesn't make my life poorer!
I just have to trust that the CD labels know, which soundtrack releases are successfully possible and which are not.
So I'll wait and see which of the countless TV series soundtracks will still released on CD in the coming years.
And then I will be happy about each of these releases.

Always loved the show and the Schifrin theme. Is your source stereo by any chance? Would love to get a Starsky and Hutch album of highlights with all the themes. One of my favourite shows as kid. Had the Corgi model car too.

I liked the Schifrin music, and also Mark Snow's theme. I never cared for the Tom Scott theme for some reason, I felt it was a bit overrated - though I suppose it was also the best remembered.

The scores themselves are rather exciting when accompanying the visuals, but I have a feeling that on their own they'd go in through one ear and out of the other, since I don't remember anything which was especially memorable. I wouldn't mind a disc of Schifrin music from the series at all, though again I can't recall how much he actually did (I love the feeling of low menace in his theme music, which probably wouldn't have suited the 'lighter' stories that often made up the remaining seasons).

I watched some of these shows recently and while I liked the first season very much, I thought the rest were pretty awful. It's not a show which has aged very well in my opinion wink

The pilot score by Schifrin was outstanding and I remember also a great score by Mundell Lowe. So count me in for a release of this!

Many thanks for the detailed reply: and would agree that the demand for such would require multi layered consideration, i suspect demand for these types of releases had their peak around 10 years ago when the re-makes of classic 70s shows were getting churned out and the FUNK/SOUL detective style soundtracks where popular. La-la-land records would make a good fit.

The Quinn Martin Collection was a pleasant surprise, took me awhile to recover from the joy, its still on loop.
