Did anyone catch this series on film music...

https://www.sky.com/watch/title/series/51553ae0-4fef-4fb6-a3f2-01ea9bdd2dab/great-film-composers/episodes/season-1/episode-1

The link is for the Sky Arts UK channel but assume it might have appeared elsewhere. I have only seen an 80s part two episode featuring Silvestri and Kamen. Not much of a deep dive into the subject and the dull voice over and interviews didn’t come across that knowledgeable but was surprised to see a series like this pop up.

Is this the one where its Sky's same half dozen resident film critics who look like they were handed the same lazy research notes and script about 5 mins before filming, but then pretend to be experts in film music?

If so think we had a thread on this.

Or maybe its different?

Yep the very one Bill. We discussed it on another thread some time ago.

It's pretty weak on details or being particularly informative, but I have enjoyed the series. It's such a reminder about how great film music used to be and what films are missing these days.

Also, it's been fun commenting "got that on CD, yeah got that one too... " And sulking about which scores are missed as the show progresses "I can't believe they missed THAT one!" etc. It's actually gotten me playing some old CDs again that I hadn't heard in a while.

There really is a need for an in-depth documentary series on this subject with more time and detail, but there's hardly an audience for it I suppose so will never happen.

I saw the back half of the series and they were RREEEEEAAAALLLLYYY scraping the barrell when it came to post-2000 episodes.

One of the shabbiest, worst researched and presented programmes ever (on any subject).
I gave up after they showed a clip of Spartacus but played the score from Cleopatra behind it (when talking about Alex North) & their discussion of Kubrick’s use of Holst in 2001: A Space Odyssey (At which point I thought i had entered an alternate universe)

Awful Awful Awful

By idiots for idiots. (a bit harsh I know but that was my thought, when I could bear to watch it)

If instead I could recommend Matthew Sweet's (who is a relative of mine) Sound of Cinema on BBC radio 3. I had promised him I would plug his show on here but forgot. He is 'doing' Korngold today at 3pm..... Its on a podcast too

I had a bit of a twitter rant about it as i have a fair few followers but Sky Arts haven’t actually tweeted anything since January & wouldn’t answer to any negative criticism anyway. It was easier to just stop watching it & forget it exists

Well this was a 12 episode series devoted to film music, I don't think you're really going to get more than that on TV. I'd say there must be plenty of podcasts that dive into this area a lot more deeply though.

I think I watched this show back when it was first mentioned on this board.
One poster above mentioned it as "for idiots, by idiots", so I guess I'm one of those idiots myself. I don't know all that much about the history of film music and wouldn't have been familiar with a lot of the older/smaller scores discussed, so I did find some of it interesting at least.

I was mostly gutted by which composers they focused on in more recent years. I was so looking forward to a talk on Danny Elfman (one of my faves), but he only featured in a "blink and you'd miss him" mention towards the end, with Spider-man of all things being the only score singled out?!

I soon gave up on the series the first time around. Hopelessly superficial.
