Don't understand why Warner considered Goldenthall the villain of that 300 fiasco- surely it was really Tyler Bates at fault, or the director being too enamored by his temp track using Goldenthall music. Goldenthall was just standing up for his rights having originally written that music.

As with the Batman & Robin score I was lukewarm about SPHERE at first.

Now, years later, giving it another chance, I absolutely love it.

It even makes me want to rewatch the movie.

I would advise not to, unless you want to look at a broken film with completely incoherent editing and main cast members disappearing in key moment of the plot and showing up suddenly as if they've always been there.

And none of their behaviour make sense.

I rewatched it a month ago and it was quite a dread.

I remember reading an article back then reporting how the production had been a nightmare. and how difficult Sharon Stone had been (Probably explaining her absence from most of the important scenes).

But THIS SCORE!!!! Is a masterpiece!! and YES it really deserves a expanded remaster.
It's been so long now, can't Warner and Goldenthal bury their grudge and give the World the expanded edition it's been longing for?

While listening to it the other day, it suddenly stroke me how reminiscent of some of Herrmann motives for "Journey to the center of the Earth" some tracks are. I wonder if he was a reference for this work?

Goldenthal may have been completely in the right but I suppose he still 'created' a substantial legal problem for the studio and caused them to have to issue an official apology. No doubt in the studio world that's enough to never want to ever work with that artist ever again.

Although I'd be fascinated to see that happen with someone vastly more known and respected by the public (i.e. Williams or Zimmer) and see them try to spin that one.

I don't own this score yet at all, I listened to it on Tidal. But I would buy an expanded edition right away. I've seen the movie only once when it came out and don't remember much of the music from the movie, but just listening to the soundtrack album you could tell that there must be vital stuff missing, it is not musically "complete".

It is superbly complete, coherent and beautifully sequenced with act structures and everything (almost like movements). It plays out like a proper symphony, ending at the exactly right time. I miss the 90s, when this was the norm.

Isn't the story here that only half of the material was available for the soundtrack? And it didn't include the end title or any kind of finale track, hence the abrupt cut-off on the disc? Mood-wise it's not a smooth ending at all. Isn't this one clear example of the original soundtrack failing to be representative? I love the release but if ever an expansion was justified, this is it.
'Coherent', sure, 'beautifully sequenced', okay, but 'superbly complete'?

'Complete' as an experience, sure. Great beginning, middle and end. Proper musical storytelling. I've never found the ending particularly abrupt, but I'll try to reevalute next time I listen to it (it's been a few years).

Well, if there was such a thing like youtube I would probably look there for the complete score.

But I would gladly pay LLL or Intrada for an expanded and remastered edition.

I would happily pay for an official expansion too, but if WB are too childish about this issue to play ball and allow the labels to work with them, it's only them really losing. YouTube is extremely useful.

The OST is a tidy construction and I think Goldenthal does the best he can with the licensable material, but 'the best he can' does not equal 'best listening experience' if the orchestra fees prevented him adding material he would have released otherwise.
