I always thought of Eskimo as an endearing term. Guess its another offensive word that must be banned by our cancel society. Gone is the Siamese Twins Galaxy too. And OMG! There's six white astronauts on a NASA banner! We got to cancel white men too. Give it 10 years and words like "Native" will be considered an offensive word too since it can refer to an uncivilized race of people. NASA will discontinue the use of certain nicknames for astronomical objects that are considered to be racist, the space agency said Aug. 5. The agency's plethora of space-gazing observatories collect breathtaking images of distant cosmic objects, which are given official designations (made up of acronyms and numbers) by the International Astronomical Union. But, the agency also gives some objects nicknames that are less technical to make them more "public friendly," according to NASA. For years, Indigenous people have criticized the use of the word 'Eskimo,' because of its racist roots. And, unfortunately, this offensive term was a nickname NASA used for planetary nebula NGC 2392. "'Eskimo' is widely viewed as a colonial term with a racist history, imposed on the indigenous people of Arctic regions. Most [NASA] official documents have moved away from its use," the space agency stated in an Aug. 5 statement, issued by NASA's Office of Diversity and Equal Opportunity (ODEO). It is unclear in the statement what potential criticism or discussions prompted this change. Additionally, the agency added, "NASA will also no longer use the term 'Siamese Twins Galaxy' to refer to NGC 4567 and NGC 4568, a pair of spiral galaxies found in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Moving forward, NASA will use only the official, International Astronomical Union designations in cases where nicknames are inappropriate." Give it 10 years and words like "Native" will be considered an offensive word too since it can refer to an uncivilized race of people. If it was an insult to those people and it always bothered them, any normal, thoughtful, compassionate person would not be offended by finally respecting their point of view and retiring the word. I can understand the nostalgia from being accustomed to certain words, images, songs, statues, etc. But if someone told me it was and is hugely offensive or insulting, I have no problem removing it from the public eye. Most people already follow generically civil rules in public - they don't swear in front of children or in a church, etc. It's called "being polite" and a small price to pay to stay civilized and maintain a civilization.

This is an entire race of people. I dunno if the US government treats them like other natives, marginalizing them to reservations, or what. It's different from some personal offense. I'm just as bothered that people now refer to the "F-word" as the "F-bomb". It's just a word and hyperbolizing is absurd. "Shut up" has become a curse. Then again, Archie Bunker could use the "N-word" on TV, but most of us thought it was just another insult, not a loaded, historically demeaning slur. In Massachusetts, the highway "turnpike" symbol is a pilgrim hat. It used to have an arrow shot thru it, and one day I noticed all the signs had the arrow removed. Apparently it represented natives as being hostile, although someone suggested it also misdirected out-of-staters who thought the arrow indicated a direction. Serves them right if they're that stupid. Better stock up on those chocolate covered ice cream bars. They'll just change the name to "Inuit Pie."

So long Eskimo Pie too. Wash your mouth out with soap; you said the "E" word. For shame!
