I love it. I would like to say times have changed but they haven’t. I don’t care. If you like his music you’ll like his opera. I’m also an opera fan and there are plenty of operas out there which have good music and not great drama.
Just my amateur view, but Herrmann's "Wuthering Heights" has always seemed a bit like Debussy's "Pelléas et Mélisande" -- they both have a rapt, non-eventful, impressionistic quality. I'm signed up for this version but have yet to stream it, and I only have a few more days.
This'll be my third experience of the opera: Herrmann's recording, the French radio version, and now this Minnesota version.
It is amazing that there are now three versions available!-- I remember picking up two sets of the old Unicorn lp boxed set because everyone assumed it would never be available again. Then the CD set which may eventually succumb to disc rot according to the experience of others. Also have the published full score tucked away on a shelf somewhere. I've always loved this opera.
