MALPASO

Music by PASCAL GAIGNEPRICE: 12,95€

PRE-ORDER
Availability date 10/23/20

LIMITED EDITION OF 300 units

Quartet Records and Solisterrae Music presents the new score by Pascal Gaigne (HANDIA, LOREAK, EL OLIVO, REMEMBER ME) for the Dominican film drama directed by Héctor Valdez.

The film is about Braulio, who works with his grandfather at the border town of Malpaso. His twin, Cándido, remains secluded due to his albinism. After their grandfather passes, Braulio will look after Cándido, who dreams of the return of their father.

Pascal Gaigne has written a very emotional and sensitive score. Performed by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra under the baton of David Hernando Rico, where different soloists act as the inner voices of the characters – especially cello, harp and guitar.

This album represents, once again, the powerful and unique voice of Pascal Gaigne within the contemporary European film music community. For this score, the composer won the special prize of the Malaga Film Festival for Best Original Score of 2020.

LIMITED EDITION OF 300 units

Quartet Records, in collaboration with MovieScore Media, presents SHORT CUTS 2019, the follow-up to last year's initiative to collect together the most memorable short film scores of each year. The 2019 selection is headlined by such as fan favorites as Academy Award winner Rachel Portman (ARCHIE), Christopher Young (FANBOY), Bear McCreary (THE TOLL ROAD) and Joe Kraemer (THE WOUND), while composers previously featured on MovieScore Media include Pantawit Kiangsiri (WINTER OLYMPIC DREAM), Rob Simonsen (IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO GET THERE), Laura Rossi (RUEFUL WARRIOR), Joe Kraemer (THE WOUND), Daniel Alceh (THE TATTOOED TORAH) and Chad Cannon (FELINE PARADOX). The album also gives MovieScore Media the opportunity to welcome new composers to the label, such as Frederik Wiedmann (BURNING BRIGHT), Joan Vilà (POR QUÉ MIENTE LA GENTE) and Michael Neilson (GILTRUDE’S DWELLING).

The animated titles in the 2019 selection include a wide-range of topics from the three colorful shorts featuring the music of Kevin Smithers through Chad Cannon’s sci-fi comedy FELINE PARADOX to Daniel Alceh’s educational THE TATTOOED TORAH. Other high-profile shorts include Rob Simonsen’s music FOR IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO GET THERE (directed by Scrubs’ Zach Braff) and Christopher Young’s score for FANBOY, which stars Sam Raimi.

Although the tracks themselves have a different feel to them due to the diversity of both the represented genres and the composers involved, we hope this selection of the best short scores from 2019 proves that great film music is still alive and well – sometimes it’s just hiding in the unlikeliest places!

THE SECRET OF IMMORTAL CODE

Music by PANTAWIT KIANGSIRIPRICE: 12,95€

PRE-ORDER
Availability date 10/23/20

LIMITED EDITION OF 300 units

Quartet Records, in collaboration with MovieScore Media, releases the score from the Chinese science-fiction movie THE SECRET OF IMMORTAL CODE, written by emerging Thai composer Pantawit Kiangsiri. Directed by Wei Li and Nan Zhang and stylishly shot in black and white, the film takes place in a dystopian future where the world’s population has become sick. To save her dying sister, Ziqi Lin (Jing Liang) embarks on a journey to the Arctic to seek her last hope, with guidance and help from a pharmaceutical tycoon, Dr. Yao (Lixin Zhao). Unknown to Ziqi is that the journey of hope is actually part of a dangerous conspiracy that threatens everyone’s life.

Performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the score is a love letter to many maestros of our common sci-fi past, particularly Jerry Goldsmith. “After producer Wang Donghui explained his vision to revolutionize Chinese science fiction with THE SECRET OF IMMORTAL CODE, I immediately knew it was a chance to fulfill my childhood musical dreams,” says the composer. “I wanted to create something excitingly new but at the same time pay musical tribute to my favorite sci-fi film scores of the past. In the orchestral part, I paid homage to my composer heroes such as Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, James Horner and Christopher Young. As for something new, large chunks of the music were scored by using only double bass, with soloist Ryan Baird coming up with a variety of strange sounds that can be produced by this instrument acoustically.”

Pantawit Kiangsiri is a composer from Thailand who has written for films, television, video games and the concert hall. After scoring over two dozen shorts, his score for THE SECRET OF IMMORTAL CODE marks his first major genre release in theatres. His other credits include writing music for Warner Brothers, Netflix, Digital Domain, Sony and Vevo. Kiangsiri graduated from the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television Program at USC, having studied with Bruce Broughton and Christopher Young.

HIRED TO KILL

Music by JERRY GRANTPRICE: 12,95€

PRE-ORDER
Availability date 10/23/20

LIMITED EDITION OF 300 units

Quartet Records, in collaboration with MovieScore Media, releases the exciting action music of HIRED TO KILL (1990) by Jerry Grant for the film co-written, directed and produced by Nico Mastorakis, HIRED TO KILL is a story of action and suspense as a fashion photographer and his group of seven models travel to a South American island fortress to do a fashion shoot. In reality, the photographer is a mercenary who has been hired to free an imprisoned rebel leader with the models in tow. The film’s cast include Brian Thompson as mercenary Frank Ryan, Oliver Reed as the dictator Michael Bartos, George Kennedy as the leader of the operation, Thomas, and José Ferrer as the rebel leader Rallis.

HIRED TO KILL it’s an excellent orchestral score writing in an era where action scores tended to move towards the purely electronic domain not necessarily because of artistic reasons, but due to cost cutting. The music by Jerry Grant recalls the best moments of his namesake, Jerry Goldsmith, with an exciting blend of ostinato-based action scoring mixed with electronics. Powerful drum kits, suspenseful textures and pulsating rhythms accentuate the heart-pounding orchestral playing with occasional local color added for the globetrotting aspect of the story.

Born in 1936, Jerry Grant began his career as a jazz/rock studio musician in his hometown of Detroit, witnessing the rise of Motown Records up close. Besides HIRED TO KILL, his film score credits include movies such as NINJA ACADEMY (1988), BLOODSTONE (1988), DARKROOM (1988), WORLD OF VALOR (1992), THE NAKED TRUTH (1992), and IN THE COLD OF THE NIGHT (1990). His TV series composing credits include episode scores and other contributions to the music of QUANTUM LEAP, HUNTER, MAGNUM P.I., THE A-TEAM, HARDCASTLE AND McCORMICK, RIPTIDE, WISEGUY, and children-oriented programming such as THE SECRET WORLD OF ALEX MACK, BONKERS, and DARKWING DUCK.
