After winning the Emmy for GODLESS this is only the third score Carlos Rafael Rivera has written. I am impressed.

Saw Daniel's interview and had to add it here even though it has it's own thread:

You’ll soon have an almost two hour Goldsmith Odyssey Interview to add to this thread too...I think this is my favorite score of the year to be perfectly honest. smile

I hadn't heard this score til the Goldsmith Odyssey featured it in a discussion with the composer Carlos Rafael Rivera. Beautiful. I immediately google searched for the CD and was distressed to find that neither this nor Godless are available on CD. I will order A Walk Among the Tombstones though.

But Damn, is there any chance of a CD release ?.

It's a fabulous score...been listening to it all weekend and it gets better with each listen.

I just saw that your interview was posted and I can't wait to listen, after I get through all the others. The interviews are some of the most engaging I have listened to. Brian Tyler's especially was delightful, and what I just finished.

I was not really into the score when I first listened to it but it is very minimal. Rivera's score to Godless is fantastic so I will keep listening perhaps at work and see when this clicks.

It begins in some minimal areas, but becomes more lavish as the show (and score) progresses. The Main Title is the musical culmination in the series (so, really the End Title), to give you an idea of where it's headed.

Maybe reverse the tracks and play it that way? It may grab you sooner.

That's actually the same way I initially felt about Godless, strange as it may seem. For the first couple episodes of that miniseries, I found the scoring to be relatively subtle and modern in style, with perhaps a couple exceptions like the entrance into LaBelle where the main theme plays. Think Deadwood. But as the show went on I started to pick up on the many recurring themes that Carlos was developing, subtly, and then he got bolder and more orchestrally sweeping in his application of them. By the end there are full on Morricone-like epic thematic statements.

The Queen's Gambit is perhaps a more subtle score overall, but it is *fantastic* in show context and really reveals more with repeat listens (again, multiple themes exist for different characters and ideas). You can get a sense of that (though a ton of material is of course still not addressed) in our conversation with Carlos here:

I would love to hear what people think of the interview that grew out of him joining us to talk about Jerry Goldsmith's sole score for Rawhide (stay tuned for that part of our conversation soon).

P.S. Thanks Sirusjr for the praise on the Brian Tyler interview. I was very proud of that one and Brian was a very enthusiastic guest (much like Carlos, actually).

One issue I suspect with Godless and The Queen's Gambit is that the albums are around an hour and a half long (which still represents a somewhat substantial abridgment of the full score, seeing as how both of those are seven hour miniseries), too long to fit on a single CD. I share your desire for one anyway (I see LLL just put out a two disc set for The Boys Season 1), but think Netflix so far hasn't showed a whole lot of interest in CD releases. The Witcher is another recent series of theirs which only got a digital score release, I believe. Varese did put out CDs of The Dark Crystal some months after the digital versions came out (and in the past did CDs for each season of House of Cards), so I guess there is a *bit* of hope -- if enough people make their desire for a physical album known!

I know that Godless didn't even receive a digital soundtrack album until quite a while (over half a year!) after the series itself dropped on Netflix. You can still find comment sections online where people were just BEGGING for it, like this one: https://filmmusicreporter.com/2017/08/23/carlos-rafael-rivera-scoring-netflixs-godless/

Carlos thanked all those people when he finally shared the news that a soundtrack was being released digitally:
https://carlosrafaelrivera.com/godless-soundtrack/

So it's entirely possible that publicly expressed enthusiasm for a CD release might make one happen. But until then, you shouldn't deprive yourself of this great music. If getting something in lossless audio quality is what matters to you, this is the best option -- 7 Digital has the full 90 minute album in FLAC (16bit, or even 24bit, which is higher quality than most CDs) for shockingly cheap (compared with over three times as much on Qobuz, a similar lossless audio music industry site):
https://uk.7digital.com/artist/carlos-rafael-rivera/release/the-queens-gambit-music-from-the-netflix-limited-series-13364924

It's really a huge bargain so grab it before they realize how inexpensive they made the album. smile Just make sure not to select the 320 MP3 option if you want CD quality (or better) sound. They also have Godless, if not for *quite* as amazing a deal (but still quite reasonable):

I loved this series. And I'm now playing the music and loving it, too. The piano stuff has a slight Glass-ian feel, which appeals to me, while still being its own thing.

I am grateful that, frankly, I prefer a digital release because I don't want to store any more bloody CDs that I never play anyway.

Also, for a sad commentary on the state of "soundtracks" in the general population, check out the reviews on Amazon:

Last night I overheard my friends watching this programme and really liked the music, what I heard. Great stuff.

Yes the series is great, yeah the score is nice, especially in the later episodes where it really flourishes, but I can't help feeling this one belonged to Philip Glass. His cellular style is an obvious fit for the running visual theme of chessboards projected across ceilings and games unfolding at the speed of thought.

Netflix seems to be all over the place regarding what soundtrack albums get a physical release. The Witcher actually is available on CD: https://www.amazon.com/Witcher-Music-Netflix-Original/dp/B084QKMZT7/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+witcher&qid=1605112975&s=music&sr=1-1 and there have been a few other Netflix productions that have gotten physical releases like the Crown (even for the upcoming season, although that seems to be an import) and Enola Holmes. On the other hand high profile movies like Extraction only got a digital release.

Back to the topic, I enjoyed the music as heard in the show. Thanks for the links for the album. I will have to order a copy.

OK, so this was ressurected by a spambot, but that's OK.

I haven't seen this show yet, but my 'chess fever' has risen after our own Magnus Carlsen became no. 1 in the world. I'm terrible at playing the game myself, but I'm very intrigued by it.

I listened to Rivera's score yesterday, and have to admit it didn't impress me much. It was OK. Maybe it's due for another chance.

To me, while I watched the show I LOVED the score! And couldnt wait to listen to it once I was done.
For some reason I was a bit disappointed...almost a bit boring without its images.
I dunno, maybe I just need to listen to it a bit more.

This was not the case of Godless though. Loved it during, after and still to this day smile

This composition, as well as the TV series Queen's Move itself, is incredible. I think it took an incredible effort for Carlos Reviera to create such a magical soundtrack, for me this is the best composer after Hans Zimer. By the way, you knew that this is not his first nomination, in 2014 his soundtrack was nominated for an Oscar! For those who are interested in the work of Carlos, I recommend looking for videos on YouTube in which music critics review his biography and work and give competent comments. I found a couple of them there and noticed that most of these channels had at least 66 thousand subscribers! I am sure their owners used the services of https://soclikes.com/buy-youtube-subscribers to buy subscribers.
