A companion piece to Jim's "bustling city cues", I suppose. I'm less interested in the bustling of a city, and more into the ethereal beauty of it. These vast musical landscapes that paint the cities in broad strokes - their sweltering, poetic aspects. I actually wrote a brief article about this a few years ago, in Norwegian, that you may run through Google Translate if interested: https://montages.no/2012/01/arven-fra-taxi-driver-og-urban-musikkpoesi/
Many of these are electronic, or have a jazz tinge. But anything goes. I'll start with a few examples:
An obvious one (especially for me and you) is The City Sleeps from EARTHQUAKE by John Williams. Those lovely, gentle chimes, that begin the cue, before it starts to build towards a standard JW grandiose close, are so tranquil and peaceful. Even though it rises in mood and grandeur, it's still a whopping piece of music.
I suppose his Main Title from the same film would fit in the 'bustling city cues' thread.
He, he. I was more thinking BLACK RAIN in general. I don't have the expanded version, so I'm not really familiar with "Osaka". I was thinking a track like "Sato" on the OST fits the bill, at least parts of it. But the whole soundtrack is full of ethereal cityscapes, really, inbetween the more percussive stuff.
JNH is so good at this. I mentioned a couple in the first post. Here's another -- the first 1:50 of the opening of GRAND CANYON (before the rock beat starts):
