Premiere release of complete score to sci-fi/thriller sequel! 1998 installment is second film in four-picture (to date) franchise from MGM. Returning from initial 1995 box-office hit is Michael Madsen, Natasha Henstridge, Marg Helgenberger. Also starring are Mykelti Williamson, George Dzundza, James Cromwell, Justin Lazard. Species design is by famed H.R. Giger. Peter Medak directs. When a senator’s astronaut son returns from a mission to Mars, he brings back with him an infectious alien organism. Sex happens, a body count rises. Enter a new, more docile Sil, designed to bring an end to the mounting carnage. In a Species movie, things always go awry.

Edward Shearmur launches with the Mars mission sequence by use of a see-sawing violin motif hovering over his primary theme in French horn. The idea grows in prominence, major sonorities enter, snares pulse and Shearmur dramatically sets a powerful orchestral atmosphere. Agitated string figures continue through the Martian surface scenes, powerful crescendos appear and the infection rears. Shearmur generates considerable suspense followed by terror as the carnage arrives front and center. In balance, Shearmur creates his haunting piano-dominated idea for the emotional-tragic Sil, heard first in “I’m Human Too” and later as her character reappears. Still another voice of the score is ferocious, rhythmically-charged action music. Spotlight here goes to lengthy ever-growing “Supermarket Chase” sequence. Also worthy of special attention are climactic battle sequences with array of alien monsters in farmhouse attic set to aggressive, dynamic orchestral fury.

Shearmur melds orchestral, electronic effects throughout, sometimes leading with his orchestra, sometimes with his array of crisp synths. Terror remains keynote. 30 minutes of highlights plus 3 unrelated songs appeared on a 1998 TVT label album. Intrada release more than doubles length of score, offers 71-minutes from digital DA-88 multi-track masters and two-track mixes made by Robert Fernandez. Edward Shearmur composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

I actually re-watched all four SPECIES movies last year. Only the first holds up. Same with the scores -- it's first and foremost Young's score for the original that sticks in my memory.

Young's score for the first one is a masterpiece and one of the scores that made me love film music. I remember being disappointed back then that I couldn't find a soundtrack album of it.

I've never seen the other films but I do enjoy Shearmur's score for the second. It's not on the same level as Young's but it's very good. Looking forward to hear this edition.

I always really enjoy Shearmur's music. Especially love Reign of Fire.

And this wasn't on my radar. Now it is!

I always felt Shearmur deserved better film fare considering how well he did with ROF and Sky Captain...

Agreed. I think he's one of the best composers to come along in the last 25 years or so.

I had thought for a while back in the early 2000's Shearmur was going to be one of the more in demand and prominent film composers. Reign of Fire, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow are terrific and his The Count of Monte Cristo is superb. Sadly he pretty much dropped out rather quickly and I believe has done some television but nothing of note.

I hated this movie, and couldn't believe it was directed by Peter "The Changeling"/"Let Him Have It" Medak. This sequel ranks one of the worst films period and not for just being a flimsy sequel. I didn't even know that Shearmur did the score. Not sure if it's for me as much I like a lot of his work.

The only thing I remember about the score is the astoundingly vicious review in the print days of FSM. Has it gotten better with age?

I checked and in fact the FSM review at the time was not kind to the score indeed. It was rated 2 stars and the reviewer complained that the style was derivative of Alien, James Horner and that Eve's Theme was similar to the Riggs theme from Lethal Weapon(!) I never made that connection as the instrumentation is so different but there's in fact some vague similarity there.
In any case I think the score sounds original, no clear temp tracking here, and it is much more thematic than most current Sci-Fi scores.

Well, 22 years is a LONG TIME in film music, and many would say these past 22 years have been BRUTAL to thematic, evocative, orchestral scoring.
I keep meaning to dig out my old copy and give it another run through.

Just checked mine - I hear something very faintly at the 0:59 mark, and again even more subtly at about 1:08. I've only listened through the score a couple of times and didn't notice until you mentioned this. It almost (almost) sounds like it may have been intentional, e.g. the recording warped to reflect the context of the 'cliffhanger' scene which might be why I didn't pay attention, but now it sounds more like a glitch, albeit very brief and not as bad as some of the glitches or cutouts and jarring pops I've had on other soundtracks (at least to my ear/on my copy).

There are definitely several glitches in the track "Gamble away", most obvious at 0:59.
Haven't listened to the full CD yet, but there are at least other glitches in some of the preceding tracks (e.g. track 28 at 0:39, 0:49, 0:59 / track 27 at 1:22 – 1:25 / track 26 at 1:07).

I don't think the CD pressing is responsible for these glitches - these glitches must be a result
of some subtle damages on the analog master tapes used for the transfer.

Comparison of the three most noticeable glitches on the Intrada ISC 460 CD:
1. Track 29 @ 0 :59 (alternate source / Intrada ISC 460 / extracted glitch)
2. Track 26 @ 1 :07
3. Track 28 @ 0: 39 / 0: 49 / 0: 59
