We were at the Elmer Bernstein concert in London, during which Michael Aspel interrupted the performance to stage drop on EB to set up and record that This Is Your Life episode. Great stuff.
Oops, just noticed Lukas beat me to posting it by half an hour! Feel free to lock the other thread, admin.
Elmer was done just in the nick of time, because his episode was in the final series of the show, which ran for 1100 episodes in total, a remarkable achievement.

This. I was there. Elmer had a ball. Although he did look at little bemused when the england band marched in playing his great escape ! The show went on till 4am (after he had already done a gruelling concert) and he was exhausted.

I did think that looked weird.
Sadly it looked liked the budget had been slashed towards the end of the series run. You could always tell - the number of 'video messages' went up and the number of studio surprise guests went down.
This is SO special, especially since I cannot think of another film composer who received this here in America in any of its ten seasons. Thanks a lot Lukas!
I thought Heston's tribute was particularly pleasing. Heston was described by the host as fighting illness at that time, but he actually lasted longer than Bernstein... Elmer passed away two years after this show, but Heston lived for a further six years.
It was england. It was cold, he'd gone from hot concert hall across London to studio, it was cold outside and probly cold in the studio too. Maybe he had gone all Private Pike and mrs B said "Elm, dont catch cold, keep yr scarf on!"
Since you seem determined, how about this is London in November and he is 80 years old. Add to that he is from the temperate climate of Los Angeles and they seemed to have just walked him over from Albert Hall where they surprised him.
